What are the best catalytic converters for 1995 California Bronco and F150 5.8L?
 

My 1995 Bronco 5.8 is a 49-state Texas truck (currently registered in California) so it only has one O2 sensor which is before (pre-cat) the first (of two) catalytic converters which are before the oem cylindrical muffler.

I replaced the original with a Bosal Y-pipe with two catalytic converters on it 10 years ago or so.

My cats are clogged.

I am a little concerned that the smog guy will ask why the air tube on the second cat is not being used. But as you can see from the photo below and the parts diagram further below, the air comes off from a port in the pipe between the cats and not off an air tube on the second cat, at least in 1995.

my 94 as a single hi flow magnaflow cat. if you weld it up so that air injection tube is out of view i believe you would be fine. only have the EGR hooked up to my motor, everything else is pulled and i was able to pass the sniffer test every 2 years that i lived in the big city. its the visual that they may get ya on it. you might see if exhaust shop could take that off and weld over it???

@Kemicalburns In California I have to go with the two cats above. Jay at dotcomparts communicated via ebay on SUNDAY (Superb Owl Sunday nonetheless) and informed me that the following second cat was the only CARB-compliant cat for my vehicle's second position cat and that Magnaflow ships the air tube "capped" and that the cap can be cut off if needed to be used, but that it will pass California smog with the cap remaining on it because the cat has the CARB-required approval numbers etched into it:

I’m sorry but that makes no sense to me. You have a 49 state emissions truck so that is the standard you should be required to meet. You should be able to buy a 49 state replacement converter with one converter and the air tube connection.

x2. A 49 state vehicle need not be converted to CA standards.

The issue is nobody will sell non CARB replacements to California. If it doesn't have a EO number stamped it's considered illegal. It makes getting replacements for a 49 state truck in California likely won't happen. Kind of like universal cats are also not sold.

The problem is that the vehicle is registered in California, so the smog shop will not pass it unless the cats have CARB approval numbers on them. I edited my post to include if you v*te D* you will also have these regulations in your state, and the entire post was automatically deleted and changed.

Drive across the state to Nevada and get whatchya need, Las Vegas is a good place for a weekend. :-jammin

Another reason not to live there. It could be a really nice place to live.

California is lost. Please prevent your state from becoming the next California.

To everybody suggesting buy and install cats outside of California, please understand they will not have the CARB number on them and will fail smog test in California and thus will not be able to be registered.
