2020 F-150 Upgrades

I recently purchased a new 2020 F-150 regular cab, short box truck with the 5.0 V-8 (Coyote). I want to change the rear end gears and add a Detroit True-Trac differential. Before I do anything, I need to figure out what the axle spline count is. The rear housing appears to be a 8.8 version that came with 3.15 gears and an open differential. All of my past experience has been with older Fords with 9 inch rear ends.

I am also trying to figure out how to let the computer know that the rear end gear ratio has gone from 3.15 to something like 3.70. Is that programmable?

I have a set of new Lariat 20" wheels and an STX grille assembly waiting for me to get around to installing them. I am trying to lose the "work truck" look.

Nice truck! I really like plain regular cab short beds. 3.73 is programmable. Make sure that yo have a Super 8.8 vs an 8.8, there are significant differences.

Thanks for the reply. I did not know there was a "Super 8.8" rear axle. I will have to do some more research, but mine has a 12 bolt cover which I assume means it is a "Super" version. I don't want to have to pull an axle to find out what the spline count is unless I have to. :'(

That truck looks nice as it is now.

Did a quick search. Looks like all 2015 and up are super 8.8s

I have been looking too and I think you are correct. 2015 was the first year of the Super 8.8 rear axle in the F-150. I wanted to go with a Truetrac differential, but I need to do some more poking around to see if their current 8.8 model will work with the Super 8.8 in my truck. Thanks again for the information. I have learned a lot in the last few hours.

There is no parts that swap between the old 8.8 and the "Super" 8.8. The super 8.8 all have 34 spline axles.

I agree, but the truck needs just a few upgrades to make it a little more user friendly. :D

I have a new STX grille that will go in as soon as I get the new emblem and the upper bumper molding. I also have to do something about the dim stock headlights. Where I live, good headlights are a must for night driving.

Thanks for the info. That should make finding a differential a little easier.

IMO a regular cab short box truck is the best looking combo you can get in a pickup. Just a timeless classic look. Please post a few pictures from time to time so the rest of us can see your progress.

IMO and nowadays, reg cab trucks just look weird.

That is just a great looking truck. I have no problem with dressing it up a bit. New grill, wheels, and maybe a few other little things here and there and you will have a real looker.

Love to see some pix once you have her dressed up.

I agree with this /\.
They've always looked better ( and seem to age better) with the needle closer to "plain". In my opinion of course.

Finding a 2020 F-150 with the regular cab, short box and the 5.0 engine was an adventure. When I found this one, it was about 200 miles away and had been special ordered by another customer. I did find a couple of similar trucks at other dealers, but they were loaded with ten grand of ridiculous, high priced, aftermarket garbage. Two months after my first call to the dealer, they called me back and told me the original customer had backed out they could sell the truck.

The truck is definitely plain. Options are limited to the power equipment package (101A), V-8 engine (Coyote) and trailer hitch. I don't plan to do a lot to the truck and most of what I do will involve factory parts with the exception of the LED lighting. My experience has been working on Fords from the 30's through the 70's. Even this Plain Jane F-150 is light years ahead of most all of the stuff I have tinkered with. The learning curve is almost straight up. I am still working my way through the differences between the regular 8.8 and the "Super 8.8" rear axle.

I really appreciate all of the feed back. It helps with the motivation to keep going. :-dancing1

Needs some rear wheel well liners. I really like these plain. I wonder what the wheels would look like with meatier tires, painted black with the hubcaps wrapped with chrome or brushed look vinyl.
