Replacing a 6.2L with a 7.3L?

So I saw a thread about engine replacement in a 2017+ 6.7L and it got me thinking. I'm buying a 6.2L for a couple reasons, first it's long track record of reliability with little to no problems , second, it's more than enough power for my modest needs (I didn't want to buy the one year old 7.3L with the also one year old 10r140, especially when the 6.2L/6r100 will do the job for me). However, that other thread got me thinking. This is purely hypothetical, but if over the next decade the 7.3L turns out to be just as stout and reliable as the 6.2L, would a crate 7.3L drop into a truck that had a 6.2L that had the 6r100 trans? I was thinking that since the 6.2L can be mated with both the 6 speed and 10 speed trans, that the 7.3L could probably do the same. Thoughts?

You can do anything with a thick enough wallet.

Heh, I guess that's true. I wonder if it can be done easily, or as easily as direct fit engine swaps go that is.

I suspect it would be cheaper just to trade it in for a 7.3.

So you’re concerned about the reliability of the 7.3 factory option so you want to rig up a crate motor to a 6R100 with custom harnesses, engine control, and fuel system?

Kellem 12-27-2020 02:35 PM

Hypnotically it could be done.....economically, it wouldn't make sense.

Is that what it would take to do this? I know nothing about engine swaps, which is the reason I posed the question in a forum to get input from others. It's not like I'm planning on doing this, I'm just wondering if could easily and economically be done. People do engine swaps on older chassis all the time, so I was wondering if this might become an option for 6.2's down the road. And while I'm guessing the 7.3L will be fine in the long run, it hasn't had the time to prove it's longevity yet, plus Ford has produced some real turds in the past, which is part of the reason I went with the 6.2.

Just put a GM LS motor in it

I was excited about the brand new "workin mans motor 7.3" the 10 speed started me salivating. That's me thou. No turbos, push rod, steel crank. I have a ton of room in there. I love it. 10 speed makes up for the big motor which by the way makes it all down low, where it should be. My Super dutys a work truck, doesn't mean I can't cruise in style. For $2300 I have 10 yrs, I have no worries.

To answer you're hypothetical, I would guess a motor change would involve a lot of electronics changes. Guys doing this motor into that from older cars took awhile to get figured out. I think control aspects are more complicated now ( If you figure it all out with a custom made bell housing and or adapter, maybe some welding and fab, you might have the code reader lit up like a Christmas tree when the inspection guy looks inside.

I bet it’s $20k by the time all is said and done.

Yeesh, any idea how much it is to do the same engine? Is it basically the cost of the crate engine if you're replacing an engine with the same thing?

Call John at total performance in mount Clemons Michigan. If anyone would know, it would be him.

Just get the 7.3...metallurgy and engineering have come a long way since the 80's. Testing programs have as well and I have total faith in this engine, especially since it is capable of much more power in future updates.

Mkos1980 12-27-2020 06:55 PM

Some of the chassis cabs are running the 7.3 and 6R140. Maybe a harness and programming from that can work.

Over the next decade? In 10 years you'll be driving a electric Super Duty. Get the 6.2 like you have planned...its a great engine.
