for those of you interested in installing a factory tach into a 93-96 f-150 it is really easy. i obtained a used cluster w/tach for $85, removed mine, swapped the speedos out to keep the same mileage and had it all back together in under an hour. any questions, e-mail me a n0tst0ck(No Email Addresses In Posts!).

so if i go to a junk yard and get a cluster from a truck with a tach it wont be hard at all to swap and i can retain the same milage?

Yes, it is a very easy swap. I had to run the mileage up on the cluster I bought, but other than that it was a bolt in swap. And Ford's techs said it Can't Be Done if it wasn't originally wired for it.

Also forgot to mention. If those of you who don't have iterval wipers on your trucks (80-91, don't know about 92 & up)

You can add them! Ford told me no way can't be done! I proved them wrong. Just go to a wrecking yard, get the interval switch, wiring and control box, and you're all set. It only took me about 30 minutes to do this swap on my truck. And I definitely like interval wipers better than running down the road in a misting rain with the wipers going constantly.

I know, but my original cluster was the base model. And I wanted the trip meter. So, I just pushed the tabs on the odometer numbers back, and ran the numbers up to match the current mileage. No, problem and there was nothing illegal about (at least I don't think there is anyway)

I'll probably keep this truck until it falls apart anyway, so I'm not going to worry about it if I sell it.

About how much do you think a cluster would cost at a junk yard, or more specifically, how much did you have to spend?

I have a 90 Custom, it has the most basic cluster, not even a triptometer, does anyone know if this swap is just as easy for the earlier than 93 dash style trucks

thanks

Hey Hotrod, I have a 1989 F-150 XLT that has the base speedo. I know that the 92 and newers use a electronic speedo, but is it possible to use one in a pre-92? The look identical.

I don't think the newer style clusters will fit, You all probably know by now how Ford is with changing wiring around right?

I bought the entire wiring harness for under the hood out of a 91 model. Only one slight problem. When I turned on the ignition switch, the headlights came on with the fuel pump. They came on for a second & went out. Everything else worked though but, If I had left the truck running the headlights stayed on too!

Just a little hint of what Fords evil minds came up with. }>

Good luck ya'll. I bought mine out of a 90 model I think and it works perfectly. All except that darn fuel guage. Always reads less than whats in the stinking tank!
