My power steering pump is LOUD!

In my 94 F150 XL. 300 I6, 5 speed, 4 wheel drive.

Is there anything I can do about it?

1966ford, Has your steering pump ever been ran low on fluid? Running the pumps low can cause them to make that wirring noise and eventually damage them. Pumps can be louder if they are not full. I have had this happen. They all wirr at some degree. Some are just louder. I did see a power steering fluid at Pepboys that was formulated to lower pump noise but have never used it. I am not big on aftermarket additives but it might be worth a shot. I knew one person who's truck had a power steering line problem that attributed to the noise, but did not fully correct it. I have found that it can be the nature of the beast. I don't beleive that there is much you can do beside replacing or maybe rebuilding the pump. Good luck.

The power steering pump in my truck is quite loud also. The fluid is full up. If it ain't broke don't fix it, just keep the stereo cranked!

Yeah, my stereo can definately cover up the noise, but I still don't like it. The fluid is not low, and I do not know if it ever has been low since I just got the truck 2 months ago. I will look around for that fluid additive, although I haven't seen anything like that anyplace I have looked so far.

How much does a new/rebuilt pump go for?

There is one thing for sure, like death and taxes, is that you can tell a Ford is coming by the sound of it's power steering pump. I have had numerous Ford products and even a 271hp 289 in a '59 Austin Healey 100-6 ( a real 'vette eater) and they all have had noisy pumps. There is a product called Prolong that I have used in my boats stern drive with success. It made it run cooler and quieter so I will try it in my steering pump to see if it will work there . If it screws up the pump, the wrecking yard is just down the road a ways. I also want to put some in my 5spd tranny to see if it will help with the gear whine there too. I'll keep y'all posted. SR

My power steering pump is LOUD!

Two years ago I got sick of the noise so I replaced the factory power steering fluid with Valvoline Synpower power steering fluid on my 1994 F150. Once the air made its way out of the system I could not notice the noise anymore and it has been quiet ever since.
