Moonroof and payload
 

The title of my thread says it all. If I opt for the moonroof, is it heavier than the material it replaces, hence leading to a lower payload capacity? If yes, how much? Thanks in advance for any details you can give me.

I believe the moonroof option adds about 60-65 lbs if I remember correctly. Ford creates a document that has the weight that each option adds or removes to/from the truck for every year model. I haven’t seen one for 2020 but there is one out there for 2019. Can’t remember what they call it.

Before deciding, do your research on this forum and others about the moonroof problems on the F150 and SD.

True, not all owners have had or are having problems but many have.

Also ask yourself, how often will you really use it.

It looks like you have your answer above. Before you get scared off of the moonroof because some people have had some problems. I personally have the moonroof and would get it again. I love it. I dont run with it open but ever time I get some decent weather I vent it and then fully open it just to keep the mechanizm and seals exercised. Once or twice a year I lubricate/condition the seals as well my door seals. This seems to lessen the sticky seal issue that I think is causing a majority of the moonroof issues. I would guess a lot of the moonroof failures happen when someone hasn't used the moonroof in a year and then goes to open it to show the neighbor how cool it is. Ok that last part is purely opinion. For me I love the moonroof and its worth the risk of an issue for me as I do like all the luxury options on these trucks.

For me I wasn't buying a truck without. My wife has had them in her last two vehicles and I am the one who always uses them. This time it was my turn. It was already cold when I bought my truck so I didn't open it much in the fall but the sun shield has been open all winter. I love the sunlight shining down on me for the little we get all winter. It helps with the winter blues. Other people live different places and different things are important to them. Even my wife has a different opinion. That is the great thing. You choose.

You couldn't give me a Ford with a moonroof. I'm 0 for 3. One broke and I traded it in. One leaked continuously and I couldn't ever quite get it fixed. My F-150 is broken, too. Fortunately, my F-150 broke in the closed position. No leaks. Just don't try to use it.

It was one of the reasons I ordered a truck. Most trucks on a dealer's lot above XLT trim will have a moonroof around here. Moonroof, FX4 package, and 20" wheels are the go-to options that every dealer seems to want. Absolute deal-breaker for me. If the standard truck came with a moonroof and there was a $500 option for moonroof delete, I'd happily pay the $500 ... and think I got a good deal!

But, I also understand those who love them. It's a very personal choice, like many other options, colors, etc.

Order mine without the sunroof, dealer questioned it twice before ordering.

Thought process was that I am planning on keeping the truck long term as a 2nd vehicle. Didn't want to deal with the potential leak down the road.

I don't regret my decision but the shade feature is one I wish I had. My wife's car has it and we usually have it open during night time driving. During the day, it heats up the car too much...

Krytox lubricant. It was recommended by a member here. I use apply when the seals sound a little stickier than usual when I open the moon roof. It seems to smooth things out.

Going on 2 years for me with the moonroof. Zero issues. I do pop it before retracting it though jic. I'd get it again.

Love my moon roof, use it all the time. I literally never close the shade and in the summer I ride with the moon roof and all the windows open everywhere I go. Great upgrade if you want it and can afford it. Agree with others it's about a 65 lbs loss of payload, but I knew that going in.

I used to love using my moonroof, optioned it on every vehicle I've had. Then I purchased a 2015 f-150 in 2015. Moonroof was replaced 5 times and then the truck was repurchased by ford. The 2016 F-150 I had worked great until 40k miles when the moonroof broke. Traded it on a 19 F-250 without a moonroof.
