How soon can you use synthetic oil?
 

Got 950 miles on my F250 6.7. Was planning on doing first change at 2000. Can I switch to full synthetic at that time or does it need more break in with dino oil first? I know some vehicles have synthetic from factory, just wondering if there's a reason why these dont.

I did mine at 950, 6.2L.

The factory oil is 10w-30 dino. Switch when you want. I did my first oil change at 5K and went with full synthetic, Valvoline PBE 5w-40.

I know the 6.2 has synthetic blend from factory. My F150 did anyway.. just wondering why the 6.7 is conventional oil.

$$$? Break in? Beats me. I had heard that older diesel engines took a long time to break in and running synthetic oil extended the break in period. I have no idea what the break in period is for the 6.7L.

I started running Rotella T6 in my superduty starting at 5000 miles. I live in an area with extreme temperatures so we always switch out the oil on our diesels to full synthetic. I will do it a lot sooner if “winter is coming” hehe.

With current milling processes, have read on many forums that 'break ins' were pretty much not a requirement.
Of course when its our money we tend to be more cautious, right.
As I have read in the past, Corvettes and Mustangs come with full synthetics from the factory.
I did my 6.2 at about 7k cause I'm cheap and got the free oil change of the blend at about 5k. At least it did allow draining of all the machine fines.
Running Pennzoil Platinum, and for what its worth have been watch the trip meter average climb from a 12.6 to 13.4 mpg and that was about 1400 miles ago.
If in doubt, cause it is your money, do the first oil change in the blend to drain the fines and about 5k later go with full synthetics.
As far as brands go that will always open up a can of night crawlers....lol........and good for another bazillion posts.....:-X04

I have 2 free oil changes so I guess I'm stuck with whatever the standard change is. Those who did the first change early, like 500mi., was that at the dealership?

The only time that synthetic is worse is when you get your wallet out.

Ok, thanks for the replies. With all the oiling and injector problems on my 6.0 I was just making sure I'm headed in the right direction on this one!

Welcome to the 6.7L world. There aren't many problems with the 6.7L. The most common injector problem seems to be when someone puts gasoline in the diesel tank and drives off.

I'm about to go to full synthetic at @ 15k . Also Valvoline PBE . :oval

I have been following this guy for some time and he does a great job in his home made lab testing set up.
This link is the middle of a series of oil performance play offs. You can tell he really gets into it and enjoys what he does.
He just did the grand finale' and will not spoil the ending.
But it seems this topic never gets old and this happens to be an unbiased play off series of many brands.
All test material is out of pocket so he gets no sponsors. Some of yah'll probably saw this set of tests and just forgot about it....

I'm going to say somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 miles. Somewhere in between those numbers is when the Iron in my oil began to level out.
