How bad is too bad on the turbo?
 

Broke open my turbo yesterday for cleaning and found the unison ring was seized on the body. Not real bad but enough I had to get a screwdriver an pry lightly to get it off. One way or the other it's obvious it was not working. Just surprised I wasn't getting any codes. Anyway I am wondering how bad it can be corroded before its too far gone. I have watched several cleaning videos but I noticed in one from dieseltechron he stated that if you had to pry off the unison ring then most likely cleaning would not help. He didn't go into any explanation of that so I'm curious. I went and bought some tools to clean it last night and will be doing that today but curious how much sanding one can do before it too much? My vanes and unison ring look good from what I can tell. It's just the flat surface on the ring mates against.


Update... below are some pictures after cleaning. Is that too much pitting to reuse? Can I safely keep sanding and grind that off smooth? Also is the notch in the unison ring bad enough to warrant replacing? I don't see any cracks but I did notice a bit of wear in the cutout.

My unison ring was stuck too. I cleaned it and reassembled and it works fine now.

BTW..The hardest part of the cleaning is lining everything back up inside the turbo and the exhaust pipes on reassembly and installation.

Wouldn't worry about the pitting, but your actuator slot is a bit worn. I ran mine like that for a long time but there are folks who would say any wear is bad. I'd make sure it moves freely.
