Grandpa's Truck F250 Supercab Camper Special Ranger XLT

Here we go,
I've been creepin around here like a dog in heat, checking out everyone's rigs... I'm not going to re-write everything, so I'll cut past my first post in the Super Cab post.

Obviously I am very new here, the few guys I have talked to are great and very helpful. just thought I'd join up and meet some great people.

Little about my past and current, I've been working on, building Jeeps since I was 15. Been going to Moab since 1997. I've had a lot of Jeeps..... A LOT!! Haha... This is my first Ford. My grandpa bought it off the lot on May 5th 1975 I grew up in this truck, many many hunting and fishing trips. Grandpa passed away a few years ago at 98. He was an amazing man and he's sadly missed.

Originally he gave this truck to my cousin while he was still alive. I'm not sure if my cousin ever did anything with it, it sat for the last 10 years.

So there I was, at work. Programming my CNC machines. Drinking a cup of coffee. Got a call from my aunt. Saying... hey. I know you've always wanted grandpa's truck, your cousin Brian is wanting to sell the truck. And before he sells it, he wanted to know if you wanted it first. I said... we both know that truck should have been mine years ago. If you want to give me that truck, I'll gladly take it off your hands. I'll have it towed home today. She says... Great!.. I'll have him sign the title over and we will leave the keys in it.

The truck was parked at grandpa's old shop for years. We have had crack heads running around there, breaking into the shop, stealing anything that wasn't bolted down, Never ending with these people. We sold the property and moved the truck back to grandpa's house. Come to find out, some crack heads stole the air cleaner, distributor cap, wires, cut a bunch of wires.

I'm going to getter back on the road and start using it as our farm truck. My wife is really happy, she's been wanting a truck. I'm going to replace and rebuild what I need to get this to where its reliable. I'm not painting it, doing any body work. I'm leaving it the way my grandpa left it.

I have a lot of updates, first off... it's been almost two weeks since it was towed home..

Sent the carburetor to my dads mechanic to get rebuilt. Found a factory air cleaner assembly, distributor parts, batteries, basically.... anything and everything that can wear out by sitting for years an years.

I got all of the cut wires soldered back together, I have a few questions and hope someone can help me out with. First thing is, I have a plug that doesn't seem to go to anything. I'm thinking that it's something that my truck didn't come with. But, I matched up all of the wires by color. I have two that don't seem to fit. I'll post pictures so you can, hopefully see what I'm talking about

I replaced both starter solenoids, new battery, battery cables, ground an so on. I don't have the distributor, wires, plugs, carburetor done yet. However... I did had power for the first time. I wanted to see if it would crank. I changed the oil, new oil filter, I turned the key and..... nothing, turned it about 4-5 more times. I switch the key off and feeling somwwhat defeated, then all of a sudden the truck starts cranking and it wouldn't stop while the key was off. I jumped out and disconnected the battery.

hope you all enjoy pictures, I have a ton of them.

After soldering them back together.

The wires are coming from the distributor and ignition coil.

This is where I'm really confused, I have two wires that don't look like they have another wire to connect too.

This is the result of working on it all day.

I plan putting a wire loom around these wires, need to find something that's high heat, since the run across the intake manifold.

disconnect the battery. I'm not sure what would cause this. I'm sure I'll get if figured out soon. If anyone has any input. Please feel free.

Disconnect the S wire on the solenoid, I forget but maybe red/ blue tracer. If it self cranks, solenoid is faulty.

Thank you for the input, I will do that tomorrow morning. Thanks

Got a few more things done today, got the distributor back together with a new pickup coil, cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

The new starter solenoid isn't working, I crossed the two posts and it would turn over. But, when I use the key nothing happened. I put the original one back in and I got the same result, nothing happened.

Another thing worth mentioning, I got the air cleaner last night. Opened the box up and it's the wrong one. The air cleaner for my year is a little bit bigger in diameter. None of the hoses line up to the breather lines from the valve covers.

if anyone has a extra one layin around collecting dust, I'm still looking for the right one, let me know. I sure could use it.

Neutral safety switch maybe. Theres a plug near the brake booster, 4 wires, disconnect that and put a jump wire on the 2 colors that match. Should be same color as the one on the s post of solenoid I believe. Follow that wire to your splices and see where else it may be broken. If all good, use a multimeter and double check the neutral switch alignment in park and neutral. Try starting it in neutral. Just thoughts

Thank you, I will give it try.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Can't wait to get this back on the road.

I have a quick question, I had my dad try to crank the starter. While I listened. The only clicking I could here was coming from the Voltage Reg. If this was bad, would that prevent it from getting power?

azroxx 06-03-2019 03:29 PM

I had the same issues with new faulty solenoids, redid all my grounds and replaced both battery wires/terminals, bought OEM parts and it fixed the issue
