Transmission longevity

I have a ford F250 4x4 with a 6.4 Diesel. Has a 135000 miles on the transmission. The truck has been problem free other than dealing with the death rattle. My question is what can I expect out of this transmission? Trying to decide to bullet proof the truck to keep for more years are trade in. New trucks so expensive. Any advise would help.

On average it should last around 250.000 miles, assuming there is no tuner or other modifications that raise the engine's output.

Thanks Mark, is there anything I can do at this point in my mileage for the transmission?

I would be much more worried about the engine than the transmission. The 5r110 is a stout transmission that has proven to be very reliable, the same can't be said about the 6.4.

Change the fluid. Use MERCON SP or MERCON LV, nothing else.

Use THIS METHOD.

We were trying to decide to do a bullet proof on the truck are trade in. We have 135000 without any problems.

Bulletproof on a 6.4?

wildbill1972 04-29-2019 08:26 AM

Yes, problem? I guess, the question is, to we keep running the truck are do we look to get rid of it.

Can't bullet proof a flawed design, the transmission tends to outlive the 6.4 its mated to.

FWIW, when I was looking for a replacement used 6.4 for my '08 I found a lot of them still running good well over 200k miles and even some that had over 300k miles on them. Just keep up maintenance and drive it till the wheels fall off. Do the deletes and keep on trucking... JMO..

I would qualify that

in the northeast you can find a lot of 6.4’s on auction that don’t run becuase seller gave them up due to needing fuel system replacements , etc. most of these are used for Home Depot runs and the owners can’t even spell regen.

as you get into warmer wide open space, yes, the high miles 6.4’s are out there becuase they are being used correctly and you do not have to worry about gelling.

The scariest thing a out the 6.4 is the valve drive train, the cooling system, the fuel system, the lubercation system, the combustion system, ....the eclectically system and the body and tranny are fine.

ic you own one you know what you have to do..fuel lube, longdtives if you have a dpf, aggressive oil changes, check the water separator, etc.

i traded mine in becuase I am planning two years on the road pulling a travel trailer . If I wAs staying local I’ would of kept it.
