Question for you 48 to 52 owners
I was wondering if there is one symbol that is synonymous to those year trucks regardless to model size like the front hood emblem of the 53 to 56 F series.

Great question, John.
As far as a symbol or badge I don't think there is one. As far as an outwardly visible feature, about the only things I can think of that are shared among those five model years are the cowl flap, front and side windows, and doors. Tom |
Oooh, oooh, oooh, I've got it!!
Saggy door handles. :D :D :D |

Fat Fender Fords

The one thought I can think of, and it's kind of odd. Ford used the same "FORD" for the panel between the hood and grill for '48-50, skipped '51 and then again used them for '52. I have always wondered why they did that. Maybe someone found a big box of them in a warehouse some time in late '51 and company execs wanted them used up.

Script tail gate |
I'll agree with the saggy door handles. That or, they shared the same hub caps?

Ah, but the tailgate changed slightly in, I think, mid '49 or '51. The latches were moved below the top tube. (Also I think, not quite sure of the exact change)

The F-1 (and up) badging is unique to that era.

I thought of something else.
48-50 had the open crank starter hole in the lower grille, and was a knockout hole in the lower valance of the 51-52. So you could hand start these 48-52 trucks, but wasn't an option on the higher compression 53-56 trucks. I plan on bringing the crank handle with me to the Central Penn Truckstock later this year and we can all give it a try. I know you have to be very careful when using a tool like that to avoid breaking a wrist. It sure won't be a "Hold My Beer" event. Tom |
