So this will be long, not sure if moderators may have to split it up into 2 post, I've never done a new thread, but here goes.
2-3yrs ago I started looking for flow #'s for 5.8 truck, it could be out there but I have not found/seen it (EVER), you hear its junk, its trash, 5.0 truck flows way better, mustang guys used it, I've visited those mustang forums, never seen flow #'s for it(EVER), I have seen diy porting do one with flow #'s, I have read that TMOSS can port a 5.0HO to over 200-210 cfm,(just lower), so I set out to find 5.8 truck flow #'s finally got frustrated,and if all I do is complain about it, then I'm part of the problem, So I set out to find 5.8 upper/lower and do something, I know our Gurus on here have done the hybrid 5.8low/5.0up, with great success, and reading their builds, gave me the 'want to' like they had, and I want to thank each and every one of them, without doing names and leaving someone out, THANK Y'ALL! So unbeknownst to my redneck az, wores than needle in hay stack, but I had a buddy ask 'try JY where we grew up?' Doh! (load up!) JY had them ALL piled up in one big cluster cluck, owner said there you go welcome to look, REALLY! so made deal with him, every up/lo we put together in piles, I find 5.8 up/lo its free (rolls his eyes nods walks off) so for the next 4 weeks one day a week we go fight rattleheadedcoppermoccasin's and skeeters so big they had ticks on'em ready to burst, but I had my 5.8 up/lo, and buddy had 5.0 HO, now the fun begins, and the 5.0HO lower looks (eerily) similar to our 5.8 lower(see compare pics)

its weird that the even ports (2,4,6,8) flow 190-207cfm
and odd ports(1,3,5,7) flow 151-186cfm, but with this in mind I worked on port 1,5, the most and port 4,8, only cleaned flash and gasket matched up/lo, only cleaned up ports to head (they had an hour glass shape instead of rectangle) I have not decided on heads I'm using yet, nothing that will require a tuner(big bucks) to me because I have a J.O.B.(keeps me J.ust O.ver B.roke) all the time, but first I got truck dyno'd here is whats done with more pics, 3" exhaust from last cat to 3" borla pro xs, si/so, and the intake hoses are wrapped with turbo blanket, and heat shield aluminum tape on snorkel at hood/rad, and a 2.5" hose where the I6/460 snorkel goes also,

with these mods already installed, I had it dyno'd in December, roll-up door was open for exhaust, skewed #'s? yes, but its a before intake install, and soon as weather permits and I can get off work to get swapped, I'll take it, 171hp@3,900rpm, and 278tq@2,800rpm

Cool stuff. Thanks for taking the time to share. Look forward to seeing the after numbers. Any pics description of the actual porting? How are you measuring the flow?

heres after pics, used blunt tip sharpie on upper, and used extra fine tip sharpie on lower you can hopefully see black lines on them, both upper/lower had a real egg shape instead of oval shape,gasket matched them and only rectangled(had hour glass shape) the intake to head ports, and flow #'s will show that I ported 1,5 a lot and 3,6,7 a little, and only cleaned up 2,4,8, of flash and polished all

flow #'s sheet I hope you can see, left column is before clean, port, polish, going down, then right side is after clean, port, polish, going down,
and this is with the upper/lower bolted together, I used a small shop-vac(harbor freight) 1hp, 2 gallon, 120vac, vacuum was, as follows
59km/h=36.66mph=281.54cfm, all ports were blocked off and tested one by one, blocking off each after test was done on each

I appreciate the work you're doing.

My chapter buddy is currently searching for a 5.8 lower for his upcoming build. (his has thermostat mount issues)

I'd like a couple myself. Where-bouts is your stash? Mussel Shoals?

While I like you're recording some numbers, what I promised myself I'd do next time was CC' the runners before any grinding.

My next one I want to get some volume numbers first.

Also would like to find some hard info on building up runners with epoxy.

I had an article on building up #1 & 5 on the outside with aluminum but it's gone.

Nice work there, really shows what a simple clean up can do. Are there any plans to further work the lowest flowing ports so that they all flow more similar numbers? I suspect the lower section is responsible for most if not all the differences.

Its called Leighton, AL,(25 mi, S.E. of muscle shoals) he is actually on top of LaGrange Mountain(Civil War Reenactment every year), Baileys Salvage, the 2nd place was in Zip City, (Florence, Al) not sure whats happen, but its closed up, I'm chasing phone #'s trying to get back there(been over a month or 2) all sign says "not doing well"? and thats never good, I get mine on and he still dont have one, I'm 45 minutes from Corinth? I need that piece that 'diy' uses to get the thickness checked on short side of 1, 5, and a carbide bit that is a bigger ball to reach on each side, I also have a piece of Delrin thermoplastic, I'd like to try and use, I remember seeing you say about a phenolic spacer needing to be at least 1" to maybe see a change, my piece is 1 1/4" thick? maybe? cant believe no spacer for our trucks 5.8 "Imagine that"

This is what I dont know the name of they modified one, you can gauge hole by running thread piece to check thickness inside port, anyone know name of this contraption?

update, took Conanski advise/suggestion, and went back in, got lower a little better, (maybe?) So my home ported 5.8 intake(boat anchor, junk, trash) on this week, and headed to get dyno'd, got hooked up, going thru test, and fuel pressure was at 47psi(holy carp), talk about black smoke(son said looked like rolling coal LMAO!LOL!) so I got adjustable on order, and they didnt even charge me, said to get it swapped come back, they want to see what I gained/lost from stock dyno in December, see pic for new flow #'s, Thanks Conanski!

Calipers. The original kind. 2 varieties, inside & outside (illustrated)

Measure between tips.

Thanks Scndsin! They somehow cut (threaded rod part, then drilled out the threaded hole and put threaded rod back through drilled hole with nut so they could measure inside intake runner, adjust nut til it touched the handle, then remove and check thickness, with it, I on the other hand, had redneck injenuidiy(?) smartness (I can spell that) cut coathanger, bend into shape, made two tape marks to check in same place, check marks with dial calipers then I remove it, hold marks on dial caliper and measure distance at tip with tape measure, crude but but I was able to know I had more on short turns than I thought. flow improved, we'll see shortly,

Last week , had fuel pressure issues, got that fixed with adjustable installed, and it being a rainy miserable day is like watching paint dry, lets go get dyno'd, 'LOADUP' and so you dont have to hunt for stockish hp/tq, here it is - 171hp @ 3,900rpm, 278tq @ 2,800rpm timing set @ 13* with the wider radiator snorkel, and 2.5" hose add at I6/460 grill hole, stock exhaust manifolds, stock converters, and 3" exhaust, borla pro xs 3" si/so muffler, then swapped home ported 5.8(boat anchor, junk, trash) and first pull 36psi fuel-177hp @ 3,800rpm, 282tq @ 2,900rpm, second pull 34psi fuel-183hp @ 3,900rpm, 293tq @ 2,900rpm, I do not know what real flow #'s on a stock 5.8 upper/lower bolted together is, but with what I had to throw together and start point(before) and a stop point(after) using same method, I believe that our 5.8 intake has potential, and someone with more knowledge than me, could get more out of ours, and you dont need $800 for a edelbrock upper/lower, not knowing what it's hp/tq potential is with no other mod, I have only seen the 34ft.lb claims for it and heads(top end kit), again THANKS! to our FTE gurus, doing the hybrid 5.0up/5.8lo, I would not had a clue where or how to start, I was just tired of looking and no #'s to be found for it, and instead of complaining and being part of the problem, I've tried to make a showing.
