1965 F-350 Ramp Truck

I was searching on Facebook marketplace Sunday when I saw this 1965 Ford F-350 ramp truck for sale. It was a 2 hour drive into Rhode Island to check it out. After seeing it in person I decided to buy it right away. It is being delivered to our shop where we will be getting it ready to tow a drift car out to Wisconsin in May.

It also came with new rust free doors not pictured

460 that runs currently but will need a bigger carb in the near future

Previous owner didn't have too much information to pass on if any one can chime in.

VERY NICE!
I would have had to have it too.
Why is the motor sitting so low in the bay?

1965 has a 1962 grille, the 460 was swapped in. Check to see how it's mounted.

That is slung low. How does the fan work with the radiator?

No fan currently. They had electric fans prior

The cab is a 1966. How do I tell that? Easy. Under the hood in the upper middle of the cowl is a rubber plug. Only used on later 1966 models. 1965 and earlier used a metal block off plate in that location as did early 1966 models.

Body Section 000 Page 17 - about 8 items up from the bottom of the page

380878-S (PP14V) - Plug button - for 1 1/2'' x 3" hole - 4 or 5

Subtle clue, but I'll wager that it is true.

I love that old truck! I would definitely check those engine mounts out before I ran it along with the rest of the truck.

I like it. Looks like a nice project truck.

Really a cool old setup! Gonna drive it with patina or paint it?

Chad, good catch on the plug. :-X22
So, looks like a 66' cab, with a 62 grille, and that looks like a chev front bumper with out the rubber bumper piece. Wonder why the 460, torque maybe? Maybe the original motor gave up and they had 460 setting around. Is the motor mounted low or the cab jacked up from the frame to match the lines of the ramp bed?
No matter, I still like the truck. However, if I was going to redo that truck to haul my toys around, I think I would upgrade the system to a newer diesel and trans that could handle the highway. Maybe all kinds of electical stuff to make any journey more comfortable. Maybe a nice 'air ride' all around.
OK OK, I can dream.

I really like how the truck looked with all the wear but with the newer doors on there being blue and white I am going to paint the cab to match the car it will be hauling around.

It's a dark plum purplish color.

I have really awesome friends who enable me to make bad financial decisions. They picked it up from R.I today and we got it right into the shop and started cleaning things up.

I vacuumed all the debris and mice droppings from the interior.

Swapped both the doors out. Grabbed some measurements so we can start looking for some donor axles with possible brake upgrades and better gearing.

Spot on with the Chevy front on it. Not sure why on the 460, it is mounted low on the frame. The mounts look very solid though. We have talked about swapping the motor with something newer or a 6BT but with the short amount of time we have that will have to wait. We will be going to the junkyard tomorrow looking for donor parts for a newer suspension setup and to get away from the 6 lug wheels. Air suspension is the ultimate dream, I hope we can make it happen

Truck!

It is a gorgeous old truck! I love the ramp trucks just cannt have dedicated one. A 5 speed behind that 460 or a gear vendor would be cheaper then a diesel burner. I put a aftermarket wiring harness in my 62 and it is a good cheap fix for all the old wires. Good luck and have fun with her!

***Don't forget to save the Data Plate off the old door.....and while you're at it, it wouldn't hurt to compare the VIN on the Data plate to the VIN on the chassis;)

I see from your pics that you've already got a brake booster. A plus! Are the rims tube type or tubeless? My truck has the tubeless rims riding on Yokohama radials! Have you checked the front to see if the kingpins are OK? Front brake drums are available. Wheel cylinders front and back are available. Rear drums are an issue. If the springs are weak, you may have a low rider already. Just load car on it and see if it squats! LOL Is the chassis a 62 or a 66? You should have a Dana rear axle. You can swap gears. Maybe the gears have already been swapped. Throw some headers on with some glass packs!!
