Carb leak at bowl gasket
I have a E5TE ABA carb on my wife’s ‘85 F-150 351w HO. The previous owner put an electric fuel pump on it with no flow regulator. Now the bowl gasket is leaking fairly badly. Kit I need is $60, is it not possible to just replace the bowl gasket with the carb on the engine? |

If it is the stock Holley you can replace the fuel bowl gasket with the carb on the engine.

Thanks for the info, I ordered the gasket, NAPA was the only place I could find it by itself and it had to be ordered.

The upper right gasket looks like just the bowl gasket. BUT if you’re going to replace the bowl gasket you will also want / need to replace the accelerator pump cover gasket and diaphragm (which is on the underside of the front fuel bowl) and is a common source of leaks on a 4180 carb. ALSO replace the sealing washers on the bolts that hold the front fuel bowl onto the carb or the two bottom ones will leak.
FWIW there is NO fuel pressure inside the fuel bowls. The fuel pressure stops at the inlet needle valve or your carb will quickly fill and overflow with gas. Where the fuel strainer screws into the front fuel bowl IS under pressure and can be a pain to get sealed, especially if you still have the original steel lines. Let us know how it goes. |

Watch the orientation of the spring when you remove, the small end goes towards the diaphragm. https://www.carburetor-parts.com/Hol...43_p_1074.html https://www.carburetor-parts.com/Hol...ts_p_2618.html |

I don't believe there is a gasket for the diaphragm, I think the diaphragm is it's own gasket. Good idea to replace whilst you have the cover off.

Without looking at my carb, is there four of these needed? |
Yes 4 of the bowl screw gaskets for the front of the carb.

One would think that these would come in the bowl gasket kit. I only see them in the complete kit. Thanks for the heads up, that would have been frustrating.

They make plastic ones you can reuse along with the blue bowl gaskets so you can change the jets when needed.
If you have a v4 carb you need 4 more as the rear also takes 4. And if your v4 carb uses the tube between the front & rear bowls there are 2 rubber O-ring gaskets, 1 each end, that should also be replaced. Use a little grease on them when fitting the tube and bowls back together. Dave ---- |

What you can do, is spray one side of the Black gasket with silicone lubricant and that side won't stick anytime soon, in the case you want to remove it a few times while you are getting things right. |

From the picture, it looks like you are getting the black gaskets, they work just fine, they just don't come off, after the engine heat gets to them, as easy like the blue ones.

would you provide a link to the blue ones?
Are you going to pull off the Metering Block ? If you have the Bowl off now, post a photo of the gasket... This is the only one I see so far; https://www.ebay.com/itm/Holley-4180...5.c10#viTabs_0 |
