New owner of 86 F250 2wd
Hi everyone, I just bought a 1986 F-250 extended cab, 2wd. Has a 460, C6, Sterling 10.25 open diff with 3.55 gears. Solid Texas truck. It backfired and then sucked a butterfly in and bent a valve (prior to purchase). I’ve got three stages planned: 1) pull motor and replace heads, install RV cam, aluminum intake, Holley 4 barrel, headers. Hope to just get her running and a little warmer. 2) single turbo with blow through carb. I have a cheap option on a turbo that is probably a little small (75mm compressor). I’d love 500+/650+ for hp/tq. 3) Lower with bags in the rear and crown Vic front end. 4) Interior updates, replace rear jump seats with a bench. I’m hoping to make a low and fast kind of rig, like a freight train. Anyone done anything similar? I’d love to hear anything about lowering given that there aren’t any off the shelf lowering beams that i can find. TD |
The crown vic front end isn't a slam dunk like it is in the earlier trucks. These trucks are wider. But with a little fabrication it can be done. Will you keep your original rearend and put some sort of adapters on it for the lug pattern? Or change the rearend out?
A turbo on a carbed engine is not the easiest thing to do. I assume you know all the work required to do it. |
That’s good to know about the crown Vic front end. Are there other ways to do it? Ill be getting a lot of help from a friend friend who knows a lot about these motors and can do fabrication. This is definitely a learning project for me. |
What type of front suspension do you have? This company makes these, but they are for 87-up only. I don't know what the difference is on your 86.

Unfortunately the pre-87s have a kingpin rather than a ball joint so the djm stuff won’t work. Majour bummer. |

My '82 sales catalog states they introduced "lubed for life" ball joints in that year. I thought I read that in the repair manuals, but it may have been in the lmc catalog.

Now for DJM you may want to give them a call as the last I heard they were making the beams for the smaller king pin. Do they even make beams for the 250 / 350 trucks? Now being you have a 250 I would guess you have the larger king pins like the F100's that have the 5x5.5 wheel pattern. The 5x4.5 wheel pattern has the smaller king pins from what I have been able to search out between my 2 trucks. The only other thing to do is swap in the newer ball joint front suspension with the DJM beams. Dave ---- |

I am guessing they don't do the king pin ones because they would be the large ones. I wonder why they don't if the 250/350 both use the same large pins, again I have not looked into them other than for the 100/150 trucks. Now that gets me thinking if the large pin 100/150 is the same for the 250/350 trucks and if so would the beams be the same? Dave ---- edit: I checked with Auto Zone and the 86 F250 pins and the 81 F100 manual brakes (5x5.5 wheel) are the same part numbers for the king pins. The F100 power brake (5x4.5 wheel) is the small king pins and not even listed for the F250. Still wonder why DJM does not make beams for the king pin F250 as it only list 1 pin size and I think the beam might work on the F100/F150 large king pin trucks. |
