What are these wheels called?
What are these called (currently on a 78 F700 I'm looking at), and are they upgradeable to a newer style without spending an arm and a leg?
It’s a Dayton style spoke wheel with demountable outer rim. In this case the rim is a locking side ring style, one of several styles made by Goodyear. The 20” locking side ring rims and tires can be replaced if you wish with modern 22.5” tubeless demountable rims and tires. Stu https://i286.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6b30nojl.jpg |
Where's the best/cheapest place to pick those 22.5's up?
Find a local big truck yard to buy used 22.5” rims, then you might even find good used tires at a service place that has the contract for your local school buses. The 22.5” rims come in widths 6.75”, 7.50”, and 8.25”. Get ones that are close in width to your original 20” tube types. Stu |
So 22.5 Dayton style wheels, just without the split ring?
Yup. The tubeless one piece 22.5” rim has the same 28° mounting angle on the spoked spider as the old 20” tube type. You can look at them in the below Accuride and Hayes-Lemmerz catalogs. The Dayton style wheels are still heavily used. They are on almost every intermodal trailer. The wheels should be easy to get.
Hit any truck tire shop. Should be able to get used rims easily. It was 17 yrs ago, but I bought them $50/ea and they were blasted and painted. Back then 22.5" Toyo radials were $250 each. Now they are double that.
Be hard pressed to find someone that wants to work on the old split rims! That is a dying art(literally). |
I call those Minnesota mags.
"Wobble Wheels" (that is if you don't get them torqued on straight). You have to lay a hammer down next to the wheel, spin wheel and tighten the lugs evenly til there is minimal/no run out. Then torque them.
