Make sure they remove the seats so they can clean the floor/carpet material thoroughly that is trapped under the seats, as well as clean the bottom side of the seats and their various surfaces.

Took my 2017 250 platinum for first fuel filter change at dealer I purchased it from. Picked it up at end of day and drove about a mile before noticing smoke and smell. Turned around and got back to service dept. The diesel mechanic forgot to clip high pressure return line to filter assembly. So the engine compartment got sprayed everywhere worse part is it got into ventilation system and coated everything. They detailed it (what a joke) still vapors burning eyes, headache from hell, and feeling sick. Gave it back and told them to replace all ventilation plumbing heater core, fan assembly, remove body from chassis and clean entire underbody. They have had it for 4 days now. I warned them that if smell remains I want a high trade at a wash for new. Might need a lawyer at that point. So has anyone had this happen to yourself or had the dealer replace a truck due to negligence. Its not not just a smell. Raw Diesel fumes are poisonous inside a small enclosed area. Would you put your child in this $70,000 truck now....... |
Wow!! Thought I was alone on this one. I feel for the others this has happened to. I stopped and checked on the truck last night. They shampooed the carpets and detailed it again. And the under hood insulation is getting replaced. The truck still smells on the outside. The inside smells like a box of fruit loops. I’m sure when the heater core gets hot the smell will be back. I’ll update on progress as it happens and will call out this dealership if needed. But I don’t want to throw anyone under the buss if I don’t need to. |
Been following along now you're hitting close to home......Good luck.

Unbelievable!
I would be so P.O.'d. That smell will never be completely eliminated. Time for a lawyer.
In the first place, to leave that clip off is so irresponsible. That's the fuel system! Could have turned out much worse. Very glad it didn't. |
In my fuel line incident I pressure washed the engine bay, under carriage, used degreaser, and the smell of diesel fuel still was prevalent months later. The different Ford Service dealership that I now use knows of the incident and I have reminded them the last two fuel filter changes to assure those Clips are secured. When checking the lower fuel filter monthly for any water I have made a practice to check the clips on the engine filter.

Glad to hear your truck is odor free. When this happened was your climate system on or was It a nice day and your windows open and how fast were you moving? When this happened to me it was 35 outside and I was running fan at speed 4 and maybe 50 mph. We all know the high pressure these fuel systems use and when that fitting slipped apart the mist got into every crevice. I really hope they fix it https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...0498b539d.jpeg |

Dirt - any update? How's it going? |

I disagree, both dealerships that I take my truck to have specific "diesel mechanics" and both have a separate scheduler for making appointments for diesel vehicles. Now these 2 dealerships may not be considered a "predominately car dealer" but my truck has always been taken care of by the dealerships diesel mechanic. Now I do your basic maintenance myself - oil changes, filter changes, tire rotation, fluid checks ...
Dirt - any update? How's it going? As far as the truck. It’s still at the dealership. They have replaced the under hood insulation and the cabin filter. I got my hands on the filter. It smelled of fuel, they have sprayed down the engine comp. with simple green and power washed it 3 times. If your down wind you still smell fuel, the inside smells like deodorizer ran it down the road and it still smelled through the vents. They have been very apologetic but they know the corner they are in. I pointed out the fire wall insulation to the service manager and said if your going to replace one replace this one to, it’s right next to the filter assembly. I don’t know if this is going to get resolved easily but I hope my truck is what I get back. I can switch over all my accessories except the linex. This is just a pain in the a:; |
I had my cooling systems flushed and the coolant replaced. While I was waiting for the mountain of paperwork to be completed I brought this up to the service guys. One of the diesel mechanics happened to be in the room at the time. He said that they've seen a ton of these. He mentioned that there will probably be a recall on this soon. He said that one of the plastic retainers cracks which you don't notice when changing the filter, once it's under pressure it lets go. So may not be the dealers fault after all. The mechanic mentioned as Dirt is finding out, if it happens at a decent speed with the heating or air conditioning system on it's damn near impossible to get the smell out. He mentioned that the fuel gets into the insulation that's on the firewall. The only way to replace it is to take the engine out (ugg).

I'm about 5,000 miles from doing my first filter change. I may hold off on it, hoping that there is a recall or service campaign. Alternatively, maybe I'll just let the dealer do the first one even though I've already bought the filter kit.

This isn't the first report we've seen on the forum of problems with the upper fuel filter lines. But if the mechanic didn't fasten the line, you can't blame Ford for this one.

Note to self: Change my own fuel filters.

Dirt, for that coin, I'd demand a new truck. What about insurance? |
