1959 223 I 6 Question

Hi. New here. I have a 1959 F350 dump truck I use for maintaining my property in the desert. It is a former city vehicle and I am third owner since city auction. Has 223 six with casting number EBP-6015-L which should be right for '59. Valve cover has 8 bolts like the later years and carburetor stud spacing is too wide for the standard one barrel Holly I bought. It ran fine with the six and the original Rockwell 540 or something rear end. When the ear end scrambled the lowest rear axle ratio I could find was a 455 GM. Previous owner worked for the Army and truck had weird carburetor I suspect came off some kind of Army equipment. No names and allen head screws. I had trouble and ended up using a Carter a neighbor had and now suspect I either need larger main jet or more cfm's as power is very much reduced. Hoping with more fuel I can overcome the gear ratio change. How can I determine what carburetor I need? Where are head casting numbers, or how can I identify what head and manifolds I have? Truck vin is F35J9R31263. Date Code: F35J03D, Trans F, Axle 08, GVW 9800, Cert Net hp 126 at 4000 rpm. (air cleaner says 139 hp, Cubic inch label covered by "use genuine Ford parts" label. Exhaust manifold says I think OE19, couldn't make out intake numbers. I am replacing cab and transmission (same T98 to use my PTO) and while stripped to frame would like to get the engine squared away also. I planned a Y block swap and came home with a 239 I was told was a 292 and have read too many posts on not rebuilding it for what I want. Now going to stay with the 223. Any advise much appreciated.

Valve cover has 8 bolts that 1960/64's have and carburetor stud spacing is too wide for the standard one barrel Holly I bought. VIN: F35J9R31263 / MODEL: F35J (the J is actually a zero) / DATE: 03D / TRANS: F / AXLE: 08

F35 = F350.

J = 223 1V I-6.

9 = 1959.

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant

31263 = 1959 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.

F35J = F350, 9,800 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (the J is actually a zero, the die used to stamp it was worn).

03D = Assembled April (D) 3, 1959.

F = Borg-Warner T-98 4 Speed Manual Transmission.

08 = Timken model B140 Rear Axle / 5.83-1.

1954/59 223 valve cover is retained by 2 studs that poke thru the cover. Acorn nuts retain it in place.

1960/64 223 valve cover is retained by 8 bolts, so the head has been swapped. I wouldn't be surprised in the intake/exhaust manifolds were also swapped.

The 223 exhaust manifold is very prone to cracking. Used manifolds are very hard to find without cracks, NOS is non existant.

The only good news is: 1954/64 Ford Passenger Cars and Trucks (except C series Tilt Cabs) use the same 223 exhaust manifold.

That Six may still have used the Load-o-Matic distributor, a vacuum-only beast (no mechanical advance) that utilizes a couple different sources of vacuum from the OEM carburetor. If this is the case it will run poorly without the correct carburetor.

Thanks for the replies. Not surprised to have had a head replaced in 60 years. Were the intakes all the same? If so, what was correct carburetor. It is not the Holly 1904 I bought in the past. Until it started flooding it ran great with the oddball carb so don't think it is vac. advance but will check it too. Have to run now with choke partly closed so think it is thirsty.

What carburetor was used on the later 223's? I see 1904 and Autolite 1100 listings but 1904 doesn't fit my intake. Is there a listing of specifications like mounting hole spacing? My vac advance is connected to venturi port so think correct carb could help a lot. Or main jet size of correct carb so I can adapt the Carter. Any help would be really appreciated.

What if it's not a 223 but a 262?

robski_1970 03-03-2019 06:30 PM

I looked up carb numbers for a 262 and found this. The carb number listings may or may not help.

Thanks. I read conflicting info on identifying 223 vs.262.

The valve cover doesn't look like a typical 223 valve cover. It very well may be a 262.

Thanks. My oil filter is below distributor and forward of the fuel pump. You had me hopeful though. And thanks for pics.
