will 460 c6 bolt up to 7.3 diesel

Will my old c6 out of my 460 truck bolt onto my brothers 90 f250 diesel? He has a 4 speed manual now, and the bellhousing is busted on him. So thought about going with an automatic. I thought I read somewhere that the c6 out of a 460 will also bolt right up to a 7.3. Is that true?

Also if that is possible, all we would need is the flexplate and linkage? Or does the driveshaft have to be changed, and what about x-member?

Sorry for all the ?, but trying to see if this is possible, since we have not had luck finding a bell for a t19 yet.

I believe it will bolt up, but the truck won't drive right. The gear ratios are different for diesel engines.

Also, how will you get the transmission to kickdown? Your '79 has kickdown linkage to the C6, your brother's '90 is FI, so you will run into problems there, too.

I'm pretty sure you will run into the driveshaft and cross member problems that you mention.

Sounds like a lot of problems...

Well I don't run the kickdown on my 460 now, just don't need it. but your right, I think it will be more problems than it helps. Just trying to get him running again as cheaply as possible. Will keep searching for a bellhousing.

The ratios are the exact same in ALL C-6 transmissions. As for the bellhousing bolting up, I have not the slightist clue. Also, the bellhouing on a C-6 is cast into the transmission, you can't change it unless you pull the tranny apart and change shells. Now, if it does bolt in, all you'll need are the motor mount and pearches, a flexplate, and a converter from a diesel (you can probably use your gasser, but the diesels have a lower stall speed to keep the motor in it's torque peek) Hope I helped

It wont bolt up, The 460 and diesel are pretty close to the same pattern but wont bolt up. Diesel trannies are different because they dont have a Vacuum modulator, because diesels dont have vacuum.

c_rossman

All C6 transmissions have a vacumn modulator. The diesels have a vacumn regulator on the throttle lever and use vacumn from the vacumn pump.

The 460 bell housing or C6 transmission housing will not bolt up to a diesel. I suppose it is possible that someone is making an adapter plate.

It has been posted here with pictures for proof that diesel engines use 460 trans. There is a adapter bolted to diesel engine and the trans bolts to the adapter.

Thanks for the help guys. I think he found a bellhousing, so we are going to just swap it out. I was only asking because like some, I thought I heard that a 460c6 would bolt onto a diesel. But did not know anything about an adapter plate. Anyhow my c6 needs rebuilt anyhow, so getting the bell for the price he got on for is going to be a cheaper route than buying a rebuild kit.

anyhow thanks again.

I just did that exact swap and NO the gas c-6 case will not bolt up to the adapter on the diesel engine. I went the other way and had to put the guts from my diesel c-6 into a gas case as the diesel c-6 will not bolt up to a 460. The diesel does have a vacuum modulator and a kickdown rod. The ratios are the same. The internal changes are in the governer assembly and a different converter.

now I am confussed

One guy says ya the c-6 will bolt to anything that has a ford stamp on it the other guy says noway.
Please post a little more then blurbs and diagrams. I am wanting to swap engines, ditch that Shell promotion maker of a 460 and use a 6.9 or a 7.3 for a daily driver.
If you don't know say I don't know.
If you do know prove it.
Your experience will save all a lot of time, and that is worth the price of admittance.
Thank you for your time gentlemen. cp

The C6 was produced with bell patterns to fit the engines in question. Thus, a C6 with the 460 pattern is different than the one produced for the oil burners. You have to get the right case to bolt to your engine.

Ford_Six 04-10-2010 12:18 AM

Seven year old thread-
The early 6.9 used a big block bell, the later ones and all 7.3s had their own diesel specific bell.

Hired Gun 04-10-2010 01:11 AM

I did that swap only the other way around and my 460 got the same milage as the 7.3 and is utterly reliable. The 6.9 or 7.3 will nickle and $2500.00 you to death. The 460 also had about twice the power of the 7.3. I would just go buy a bit newer truck that has a Powerstroke in it already. It is a lot better engine.

cprawat1 04-10-2010 01:54 AM

will the c6 bolt to 460 & 7.3

Ford made the C-6, 4eod, 4sp and a five sp for the 9th generation f series pic up truck.
Each transmission was made to fit a total of eight different engines from the years 1987 thru 1991.
There are only four transmission made to work. They all fit the engines ford made for that truck, they all will work.
As I said earlier if you know prove it. If you don't know say I don't know.
