91 idi project

So I am hopefully getting a 91 F350 regular cab Babur blue with a flat bed on it for a project I want to go over every thing on this truck and restore/ add some juice. I know it will never make the power any powerstroke could but I think 300+whp is definitly attainable from R&d performance parts but I need to find a person who does good engine work relatively local I love in Pontiac Michigan and anywhere within 4-5 hours Drive is fine for me. I will be putting new rods new pistons whole 9 yards in this rig. I need someone to balance the crank and I want engine bored and sleeved but I don’t know any machine shops that could do this around here I want to start getting quite on things . I really would like only people with experience with the shops to chime in Iv had bad times with phrases like “ I know a guy who knows a guy....” thanks for the help guys any advice is apreciayed

That sounds like a cool project! Post pics if you get a chance. :-X22

Use the stock rods for 300whp, if the engine isnt clapped out, i would ring bearing and hone, if it takes over .008" i would bore. If it needs bored then go that route, i wouldnt sleeve unless you had to, most shops around here wont sleeve an idi block due to the tendancy of the sleeves falling.

If you consider that 300whp is roughly 400bhp, and that the majority of powerstrokes are stock... a 300whp idi is making more power than the majority of powerstrokes. One needless comment deserves another.

Doesnt take anything special to get what youre wanting, 110cc pump and a sxe 257. I have the 110cc pump and a 364, out tows our stock 11 6.7

with only the 110cc? I thought I’d have to get the 150cc one it’s advertised as 300+ who capable and that’s basically my goal is to make pull with as much power as my 6.7. Out of curiosity what horsepower would you need rods?0

Well here is the old girl. Iv been busy but I did indeed buy it and have been tinkering with it I am in fear of cavitation... really hard to start extremely low on power barely would hot 45 mph, and only a light haze of white smoke. The radiator hoses are swollen up like they’ve been soaked in oil. I don’t currently have a cherry picker but will be getting on this weekend.
I work 7 days so apologize this will go rather slow but I’m hoping in about a month to have the engine out and tore down

Olds64 03-27-2019 08:02 AM

Oh yeah! :-X06

Make sure you get an engine stand big enough. This is the one my spare 7.3l IDI is on.

i can tell you it DOES NOT have cavitation.
simply because it starts.
if the engine was suffering from cavitation, at least one cylinder would be full of coolant and the engine would not turn over or start until you pulled the injector or glow plug and pumped the cylinder out.

Cavitation is one of those big scary monsters. Very few blocks have it, but everyone's scared of it.
You have a small chance of ending up with it, but the chances aren't high especially if you take care of your coolant.

Heck, I had a guy bore my 7.3 .030" over. That 7.3 had other problems(namely a connecting rod snapped in the middle), but no cavitation problems. Still had coolant in it 18 months after the rod snapped!

Well this awesome news basically means il be all set to build it up.
On the further note I keep having something else break on this VW I’m trying to sell to make room in garage to actually start this project turbo, maf, and than an oil leak. Got done changing the oil on it and snapped the plastic dipstick tube..... waiting on that part. But I did pick up a cherry picker and an engine stand from a buddy of mine last night

I happened to find a picture of the 93 I had back in high school.man I wrecked that thing so many times

Olds64 04-01-2019 06:20 AM

I bet that 93 was fun, carrying all your buds around in a crew cab! :-X22

The rings in all 8 cylinders are clapped out. All of them slap in the cylinders pretty good. Some of them have cracks in the center of the piston. Iv heard pretty normal will be looking into Hypermax pistons just don’t know if there with the money hopefully by next week it’ll be completely tore down

Does anyone know if I really need a main girdle? The block at the shop at the moment and I can’t get ahold of Justin at R&D. His website says out of stock and I need it rather soon. I’m planning on s366sxe turbo and 150cc pump no water meth I wanna work this truck when it’s done.

hairyboxnoogle 05-05-2019 11:12 PM

I would girdle, i did mine for piece of mind. As far as your question of rods, it took justin a few months with his big pump to bend the rods, they should handle the 150. I would imagine thats probably nearing their upper limits though.

DarkOverCast 05-06-2019 12:25 AM

I was under the impression the girdle was mainly for pulling rpms above 4k? I do like the idea that the mains get studded though, but if only turning stock rpm, I wouldn't think it would be necessary.

rjrandy96 05-06-2019 08:22 PM

So I had an injector come apart on the inside of the of the head .... was able to get it out but damaged the precup. Does anyone know where I can get one for it? It had 88 stamped on it,I think there’s different ones and wanna make sure I get the correct one.
