Tranny swap
Hi everyone I would like some help please. I've owned ford trucks since I was a wee lad and on the trucks, and mustangs too, I've attempted multiple transmission swaps. Some more successful than others due to the incompatibility of the eng/bell housing/tranny in question. I own a 1967 F250 4wd w a 390 and a 4spd. I would like to upgrade to a modern overdrive unit and I'd rather not do the trial an error thing again. I would like some advice on the most expeditious way to make that happen. Fabrication of all kinds is not a problem, I just want it to bolt together right the first time. Thanks, Eric

Since you have an FE which ended in 1976 before the advent of overdrives, it will be $$$$ expensive.
1. Easiest would be the NV-4500 which you can get a kit from Advance Adapters, and others. It can use a mechanical clutch. 2. You can probably get a Tremec 3550 kit from AA which can use a mechanical clutch. 3. You can get an adapter for an FE for a SBF pattern trans (M5OD, ZF-5, AOD, AOD-E, 4R70W, E4OD) from Berndtsen's. The computer controlled trans' need an electronic controller. The M5OD and ZF require a hydraulic clutch. 4. You can get a car trans kit such as a Tremec TKO-500/600, from Modern Drivelines and others, but it only has a 3.25 First gear. 5. You could use the Ford/Tremec 4 speed OD, but it is a POS, and parts are hard to find. |
You could take a look at Gear Vendors overdrive. |
A Gear Vendors unit can only be used in 2wd on the TC rear output for a 4wd. What 's the use when you can't run in 4 High in OD on snowy roads. In Alaska, we can run 70 on ice at below 0.

The GV unit has a lockout feature that prevents shifting into overdrive when in 4WD. So for those who want to go fast on ice, it's not for you. |
Thank
Thanks for all your help. I was hoping for a junkyard solution, oh well.

By far the easiest and cheapest is to use a GM 4l60 or 4L80. With trans, rebuild, controller and adapter I was in the swap 1500.00 which was easy to swallow. I also did the Holley Sniper EFI when I did the swap.
