Just got a quote from Safelite for a new windshield and back glass

After a week of not getting back with me, they finally quoted me a price of $655 to install a windshield and solid back glass. This it with the old glass already out.

2X on this.

Rope, warm soapy water + a pair of helping hands. You'll have it done yourself in under an hour.

Absolutely not. I had a local glass shop do mine for 400 with glass and gaskets. Try searching for a local shop that doesn't have such an overhead.

that's nuts. I jjust had a new FORD windshield installed in my 71 WITH the stainless trim for $229. I supplied the gasket.

Had my 78 done last year by a local glass shop. Windshield, gasket, and labor,$300.

Who did you use ? I'm not that far from you and will be needing a new windshield soon.

...what are they trying to do, make a profit??

Shortbox4x4 02-13-2019 05:56 PM

Go somewhere else! I had a local glass shop install my front windshield after the body work/paint was done. Think they charged me like a $75 or so. They had it done in an hour. I supplied the gasket. They even glued my rear view mirror back in for me as well.

I'm waiting for another quote from a local place, but the guy wants me to bring my truck in. Like I said, there's no glass in it now.

....and no seat or bumpers or grille. I'd have to trailer it.

I've just been nervous about doing it myself because I read several posts here about people recommending having a pro do it, and even some guys said that the pros broke windshields. All the YouTube videos make it sound pretty easy with a good helper, though.

Put the seat in Oakly up and drive it to a local place...that is crazy prices for a windshield installed.. My local place did it for $90 and I found out afterwards that a new one would of been $150....Shop around.

I paid the extra to get a car lite branded one installed and it was #25. he generic brand was $250.

I was disappointed to see the Car lite was still Mexican made though.

Sounds like they didn't want to do the job for some reason, and quoted a stupid number, so you'd go away. It worked.

I was given $725 for my '66 Stang from them. I found a original windshield on craigslist for $75.00 and bought a Steele gasket and installed is myself in about an hour and a half. Looks more intimidating than it actually is. Rope and Soap works the best!
