Thinking about rigging up a 48 gallon gas tank to my truck
I'm thinking about buying a 48 gallon gas tank for my truck. It's a junkyard one, so hopefully it should have the lines attached to them. I'm thinking it should fit but the fuel lines could be a problem. A brand new one is $550 and that's a discounted price. The original price is about $810. We are planning on taking a 850 miles trip pulling my 9k lb camper this coming summer so I know the fuel range will be barely 200 miles so it's going to suck filling up 4-5 times and getting about 8-9mpg. I just want a little more range out of it. Here are some prices I found on a used one. I know the crew cab long beds gets this tank standard but there has to be a way.

Titan makes a 55 gallon tank. Search my threads to find the one I posted about it and it lists some vendors. |
I just drove 3800 miles pulling out 5ver, and averaged 7.5 mpg, I was concerned about range also, we had our 2 dogs, and they needed a potty break as much as tank needed filing, so worked out fine.

In my ‘15 f250 I had a 24 gal tank. Had a major issue when pulling my 5th wheel. Put in a 33 gal aux tank, gravity fed. Problem solved. |
Best of luck and keep us posted. Maybe the gasser will have room without the DEF. there red was one dude that rigged up a tank where the spare tire was, but other than that there are no examples of success with enlarged tank on a gasser. If you figure it out I’ll be right behind you... |

Just to be clear here...Is your truck a '19 6.2 short bed with the 34 gallon tank?

I took a look under my 6.2 CCSB last time I changed the oil and it looks like there would be room for at least 15 more gallons in the area where I think the def tank would otherwise be. I remember thinking that they should have made the tank bigger.

Agreed that there is lots of unused room under the SB crew cab. I don't know if the 48 gallon will fit, but I know more than 34 gallons will. We 6.2 owners don't have the DEF lines, tank, pump, heater, etc. etc. |
A friend of mine bought the 6.2 CCSB and complains about having to stop for fuel too often. It really twists him up when we drive down to South Carolina together. With my 6.7 CCLBDRW and 48 gallon tank, I don't have to stop for fuel until we actually arrive at our destination. Switching to the 6.2 myself, and though it won't go as far on a gallon of fuel, I'm still sticking with the CCLB so I don't have to stop so often (among other reasons).
If you manage to shoehorn a 48 gallon tank into a SB, that could be a real game changer. Good luck! |
A stock long box 48 gallon tank will not fit between axle and underside of the the cab. It’s just too long. Your best bet in transfer flow and Titan. The downside to the Titan under bed is how far below the frame it sits. You also have to be careful you have the certifications for gasoline vs diesel. I too would look for a secondary tank where the spare tire sits. So you don’t take up space in the box. I don’t believe gravity feed is allowed, so a pump and electric opening valve as in some of the other threads would be safer. |

Here’s a thread in the gasser engine forum some of us have been chatting about this in: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post18338944 per the last post the long bed tank is 77” long. i don’t think the issue will be overall length, but rather the shape and strap points. You definitely couldn’t use the long bed tank strapped at factory points as it would interefere with the rear axle as noted by the above poster. if you figure this out, or want to go in on a small-run custom tank for ccsb gasser, I’m in. |
I, too, want to know. I have a SCLB, so I do wonder if the "big" tank will fit under mine. (I would think a CCSB and SCLB offer about the same amount of space).
Detailed pix are a must, should this actually work out. I will buy the first round of beers for whomever accomplishes it and does a decent documentation write-up! |
