When working with lead, what type of lung protection do you use?

I actually use a fan that blows the fumes away from the work area. I'm not even sure a 3M respirator is capable of filtering out whatever the lead emits when heated. From the Eastwood videos I have watched, I feel safe doing that.

Back in the 70’s we were still pouring a lot of lead with cast iron soil pipe. I don’t think I have any effects from it. I also wonder about the glue vapors we inhaled.

If you ever built models as a kid, I also wonder about that glue too. :D

01/05/2023 Update

Happy new year!

Well, I can now say the metal work has finally come to an end! At least rust repair and body color paint work, I'm down to just the front bumper that I'd like to bring back around and the rear roll pan that I still need to fabricate, but with this update, it's the last of the major metal fab. Lots of lead work in this update, along with the rear fender rust fabrication as it was very tedious and time consuming. The tailgate on an F2 is incredibly thick, and this one was as beat up as they come. As I get closer to the end, I can honestly say this was a much easier project on the surface than it appears, as every single panel on this truck had minor rust, or heavy damage from just being a work truck, but I wouldn't change a single thing. In fact, I can say with complete honesty that I have come to love the F2/3 long bed trucks more than the more popular F1 flavors, and I never saw that coming. I'll keep posting right to the end and have every intention to make the PA truckstock this year, I'd love to meet each and every one of you guys who have followed me on this journey, as well as providing so much advice, info and support!

lead work over the patch panel. I am getting better at it, but it really is hard to do. don't expect to buy a bunch of lead work stuff from eastwood(like I did) and expect to just start laying this stuff down. you'll burn through tons of lead learning as you watch it land on your leg, the floor, small pets and innocent bystanders before you get it to stick,

I know I'll get heat for this if I'm wrong, but the lettering was silver, not white. I don't see any signs of it being repainted, nor could I imagine a farmer doing that anyway, but happy to hear everyone's thoughts on what was the normal color from the factory.

The hardest thing you can (try) to do is rust repair into dented areas. Trying to fix the rust while leaving the dents was both stupid and time consuming. yay me.

hello, that's a good job. Do you have a component paint for painting? or 2 component paint taken?

Great work!!! And I'm with you on the F2/F3's vs the F1. Don't get me wrong, if I had an F1, I'd love it. But the more I tinker on my F2, and keep shuffling its parts and pieces around the shop trying to get other projects done first, the more I love the bigger truck. Mine has been on the back burner, behind the furthest back burner since last spring with other projects, but recently I cut a huge hole in the cab, and have been grinding welds the last several nights. Been meaning to get back on here and at least show some progress pics.
I have gone through your entire thread several times, knowing that I will be doing a lot of the same things you've done, and trying to learn along the way. If you keep this up, you aren't going to have anymore work to do on it, and you'll just have to be stuck enjoying it instead. Darn.
Good work, and thank you.

Tony, great job with your metal work.

I hope you get it finished by this summer, and it looks like you will, so you can drive it to the Central PA Truckstock. It will be good to meet you and check out your truck. And it will be great to have another Meadow Green truck at TS.

If I'm understanding this correctly, I use a single stage color, but then overlay that with a semi-gloss clearcoat. Hope that helps!

We are planning to attend this year, I'm registering the truck this week and beginning the process of shaking things down. Can't wait to meet you and your family!

Great work! I also have all of this work ahead of me.

What made you decide to use lead?

My project will have a similar goal- make an old work truck solid again, and embrace some of the scars

I wanted to use lead becasue it's more structural and less liekly to crack on the fenders that might be exposed to more vibration while I drive, plus I really wanted to use repair techniques that would have been used back then.

rockfarmer9 03-03-2023 12:48 PM

Anthony,
WOW! I just spent over 4 hours going thru from start to now of your pictures and info. Looks like you have several thousand hours involved in this project. Definitely a labor of love, I would doubt you could sell this truck and recoup your time, and expense. What a great job! I have a 50 F1 that I have been driving for over 40 years now. It does not look show quality, and never will. It has been used as a truck for most of the 40 years, but not so much now that I have other trucks to use and abuse now. I just try to keep it going, still flathead V8, have upgraded to front discs, and that has been a wise choice. Electric wipers, and a couple other mods to make it more user friendly. I am currently working to convert my 49 F1 to blend with a 97 Explorer all wheel drive. Life keeps getting in my way, grand kids, and family vehicle issues and etc. I was searching the forum for info on a tranny on my 85F150 and saw your thread and four hours later, I am writing this. Congrats to you for all your perseverance and determination that has produced something you and your family should be very proud of.
Great Job!
Terry

Hello Toni, that looks very good. I'm done with the paint too. I will now create an artificial patina. do you leave the paint shiny?
