This is so awesome! Thank you for keeping such a detailed diary of your F2 restoration! I have just purchased my F2 project and, daunting as it is, finding threads like this really makes me feel like the impossible is going to be possible! :)

Thanks, it feels like I started this project decades ago. It was my attempt at making a diary of what I did for my girls to see, and I'll be honest, it also helps keep me motivated.

10-24-2021 Update

JUst a quick update for now,

The hood has been fitted to the truck, although I don't see how the hood hinge bolts I got from LMC are in any way for this truck, and the hood doesn't settle on it's own in the rear without my help. But it does fit and look cool, now on to the front fenders!

Also in the shop this week I find a work order from none other than the shop foreman herself. She brought her car in for a much needed buff job and some suspension upgrades. She keeps me running for sure!

December 2021 update

Fenders update - I figured I'd have them done by now, but have been challenged with so much rust in odd places, plus countless hours of dent removal. Check my prior post for the photos of where these fenders started at. Thanks to Wayne for offering me some patch panels, but sadly I already had a set made for the F1, and in this update, you'll see how I had to make these work. As of today, they are ready for primer, but still not done. This update has a TON of pictures, I kinda went off the deep end, but what's abuild thread without an snapshot or 2.

Stay tuned for the next update once I have these in paint and hung on the truck, enjoy!

Filing the lead down to mitigate the amount of sanding you will ultimately do with lead, as it is much harder to shape than bondo, so if you're in a hurry, lead is not for you!

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b1f46156c1.jpg
On the second fender, I cut the patch panel down to fit the F2 fender on an angle to avoid the kinking that seemed to happen on the first fender, which I plan on re-doing.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8d6e5f9089.jpg
Angle cut shorter to fit the F2 fender, which seemed to add some strength

When using the lower fender patch panel, you will have to shape the edge to match the original metal, as the patch panel is far more rounded

finish sanding and shaping will eat hours of time
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...8d13a9f176.jpg
To say you will block sand lead for a while would be an understatement. I do like the strength of lead over plastic filler though, that's definitely apparent when you're working with lead
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...37f3eec5f0.jpg
My fenders were quite bent out of shape so I had to let the patch panel "guide" them back into shape
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...d24abfd81f.jpg
The panels I had on hand to fix the rust (Sorry Wayne, I had these already)
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...a77851152e.jpg
The forst fender I cut straight (left of the picture). I didn't like the way it ended up once I was done
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...38d8c6b397.jpg
Here is where I cut the F1 patch panel straight, and even though it welded in ok, I just didn;t like the final result
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...16939d5991.jpg
Cut down F1 patch panel is necessary in order to fit the f2 fender
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...554adb413c.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...b679c237f3.jpg
The chalky residue you see here is an acid etch that will help bond the KBS Coating I will apply once I finish the metal work
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...dddd9663a1.jpg
smoothing out the passenger side fender, which was damaged the most
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...ffa6edbe76.jpg
Pounding, shaping and smoothing... hours and hours. this takes a lot of patience, as I am finding it quite easy to over-work the metal.

Thanks Tom! I am really getting itchy to finish the truck... I'm coming up on 3 full years of the project, and can say I never planned on it taking that long. :)

Tony,
Your doing great! Lots of work there on the panels and fenders! Good pictures!

Thanks Chris! Everyone around here(my neck of the woods) keeps telling me I could be driving it right now if I would have just bought new metal, but I just can't bring myself to do it. :)

Wow!! Amazing work! Great job, you need to change the name of your thread, cuz your truck will look much better than 'mater...

I find it funny that people are saying buy new metal. Have any of them searched for new F-2 to F-6 front fenders?

I think you're going to regret keeping all the rear springs. I took mine down to 6 and it still rides like an ox cart

Thanks! yes it will probably look much nicer than 'ol mater, but there are plenty of dents and dings I'm leaving in that will at least keep it honest. :)

There couldn't be a truer statement, lots of metal for the F1, and I personally like the bigger wheel openings, they just have their own style.

Hello Toni, thanks for the great report. I haven't been in the forum long. I only started the project in October. I am very impressed by your work. I definitely have a few more questions for you. Please keep it up.

I have thought about the stock suspension being rough, but my thinking was that I will actually have a 16 ft trailer behind it once in a while, so I'll have to see how it rides, so how does 6 handle weight in the bed?

Welcome to the forum and thank you much! You're welcome to ask me anything about my build, I've tried to post as much info as I could with regrads to what I was doing. My plan from the beginning was to save as much of the metal on the truck as possible, which has proven to take a lot longer. I also had no desire to remove the dents, just the rust. Good luck on your project!

12/30/2021 Update

Merry Christmas! For the last Mater update of the year, I was very happy to finally make significant progress on the truck. so many times progress seems to come to a slow grind when I move into the next part, and the front fenders were no exception, but at least the end result was exactly what I was hoping for. In this update I added a few pictures to show where the front end was, and where it is now. also as a reminder, I have desperately tried to keep filler off this truck as much as possible, and the only places I have used it was where rust remediation took place. If it was smashed in, I hammer and dollied it, and left it alone. Have a happy new year, and see you all on the other side.

Cheers,

Anthony
