Ram does it again. Sales up 34% in December.
 

Ford sales down 1.8%, although still extremely healthy sales of 88,000 units in December.

Ford sales essentially flat in 2018. Ram sales up 7%.

Nothing like a flat or decreasing market share in an increasing market to ensure survival of the company.

Hey Ford! What does Ram know that you do not?

Maybe interiors worthy of your astronomical prices?

Maybe ride and handling not straight from a 1880s buckboard?

Maybe modern pickup buyers could care less about 80 kazillion ton towing capacity when 6000 lbs is the most they are likely to tow (if towing at all)?

Maybe modern pickup buyers could care less about huge cargo beds, (too tall to reach into without a ladder), and multi-ton hauling capacity, when the modern buyer very often is a 5'-2" woman whose only hauling is a few bags of mulch back from Home Depot?

Women have significant purchasing input into 80% of all car transactions. Women (mostly) do not care about being the "Big Dog". Women (mostly) do not care who wins a drag race.

Ram's wimpy coil/air springs do compromise maximum load, but they ride/handle nicely. Maybe you should try these as an option?

PS - Chevy sales were also flat in 2018. In fact, Ram outsold Chevy in the last 6 months of 2018, and nearly beat Chevy for the full year. Chevy trucks are also known for their cheap interiors and jiggly/bouncy ride.

H'mmmmmm. Ram may be onto something with its nice interiors and smooth ride.

I for one don't like the idea of having coil springs at all four corners of a pick up truck. Especially on a work/play truck. As far as the ride quality on the Ram trucks. I'm not sold there either. Yeah they're a little smoother than an F series truck. But they wobble side to side too much for my liking. So yeah I prefer the sure footed stability of having leaf springs in the rear of the truck. And I for one hope that Ford NEVER changes this. And I like the way my 2011 F-250 rides. But to be completely honest I also think that my 1978 F-150 and my 1986 F-150 trucks both ride smoother than my 2011 does.

You are perhaps within the demographic that Ford is targeting. You are not, perhaps, within the demographic of the pickup buyer of today.

This happens all the time...new models are introduced and they will steal a few customers from other brands and get people from the existing brand to make an upgrade.

Ford Trucks have been out now for 3+ model years without a significant change...little tweaks along the way but nothing of the sort happening at Ram the past few weeks.

Those days are not that far off for Ford and we will witness a similar jump in sales.

Ford is not giving up on their bread a butter (trucks and SUV's) while at the same time significantly slowing down their car sales.

Ram may have an edge now (although I am not convinced) but just wait a few more months...
