How concerned do I need to be with 5" clearance?
So in my current configuration I'm completely level. Like perfectly level. The top of my front A/C is pretty darn close to 13'6".
I've got a hair under 6" of clearance on the sides... truck bed level, fiver level, parallel. But if you look at that little flair at the back center of the tailgate... how it turns up just a little bit... at that point it's closer to 5". 1. I don't want to raise my Reese Elite 25k. it barely fits under the backflip as it is. 2. I don't see a way to adjust the pin box. Does anybody know if my pin box is adjustable? 3. I hate the sound of crunching fiberglass... I've already heard it once when I lowered a nosecap onto the bedrails of a previous truck -- don't want to hear it again. What I've love to hear is that my configuration is fine. If not, that my pin box is adjustable and has room...and hopefully I won't end up taller than 13'6". Mine is the same way...about 5 inches from the rise in the tailgate center and close to 7 inches on the sides. Raised my hitch to the highest setting. Only time I got close was when I had to detour off the highway and make a u- turn in a powerline right of way...close to the top on the truck bed and close to the front legs and frame rail going up an incline and back on the highway. My driveway has a slight incline to where its level under my RV cover. 14' height on the front of the cover and it clears by about 8 inches.

Man, that is an incredible set up for home storage! I would have to move to so something like that; but maybe some day. I’m gonna save those pics. |

Looks like I have the same Roto Flex pinbox. My Curt Q20 barely clears my bed cover at the highest setting. Easier for me to raise the hitch then the pinbox and the truck sits level enough for me. Put about 5K miles on the rig since March. Had a Fuzion toyhauler for 3-1/2 yrs before the Solitude the wife wanted. The 17 and up side rails on the Fords are about 2 inches higher then the previous models so this can be a potential problem.

With the trailer 13'-5" high, there are precious few options to gain bedrail clearance. I'd be tempted to raise the hitch and/or lower the pin box and then lower the rear of the truck to keep the trailer height under 13'-6". T believe you can gain about 2" using shorter blocks on the rear axle of your dually.

Everyone has different circumstances but I know 5" is not enough clearance for me. I run 7" and at times have come within an inch of my bed rails; and that is even too close for comfort for me.

This is proving to be a perplexing problem. Turns out my hitch is already as high as it goes. Pin box does not seem adjustable, and I can’t find anything online saying how to adjust them. Trailer has very little room to grow taller anyway. Sigh. |

Good if you want to adjust for ride/ride height or headlights. Pin box might be able to be adjusted. May take drilling a hole on each side to keep the same number of bolts. Check with trailer manufacturer if in doubt. Swapping to a pin box that positions the pin lower is another possible solution. Happy holidays! |
The center of the tailgate is not the issue. It's the sides. Where I run into any problems with clearance is when pulling into a service station where the truck twists one way while the trailer twists the other. I have 6 inches of clearance and never had a problem with the trailer touching the truck (except the hitch, of course).
