92 351 into 95 Bronco w 302
Hello everyone, we have a 351 crate motor we picked out of a 10/92 mfg date f 150, we have a 302 w 5speed. I will need to buy a 28 oz flywheel right ? The pressure plate and clutch were replaced around 20k prior to today and I am for sure going to put a new clutch in.....however I am not sure about the pressure plate . does anyone have a good mfg/brand preference, I am sure the kid who rebuilt this clutch last time used the cheapest stuff he could.
The slave cylinder was the cause of the failure and that is why he rebuilt it.. I had to replace the master cylinder last year and with some diffuculty I was able to get it to work. It has never really been good. just good enough. My plan is to replace the crap that you get from AutoZone with quality parts and I hope some of you can offer me some better choices. Fire away boys......I have the tools and the skills.....just need some of the hard core knowledge. Thanks ps...the Mountaineer engine is really running well for those who wonder.....I didn't put it into this bronco when my son found the 351. AWD is great for his travel to and from bozeman mt in the winter. Thanks Rick Great Falls MT |
great swap, should be a direct swap for the most part. the knock sensor from the 302 will not be used. did the 92 5.8 use a remote mounted TFI? yes use a 28oz flywheel, could probably use one from a 95 F250 5.8/manual trans. Otherwise this is a plug and play setup. Take this time to install headers, far easier with the motor out.

Thanks, What is the 'remote mounted TFI/,.......so alot of people have issues with the slave cylinder for the transmission and I see tons of choices. LUK? .........CENTRIC........BRUTEPOWER/PERFECTION....these are what i judge to be the best choice!
Would everyone please post a bad choice or experience with any of these?....are any of them made in the USA? TIA RICK |
here is a tfi mounted on the Dizzy
https://www.holley.com/products/igni...ord/parts/8453 Here is a remote mounted dizzy, notice the pigtail which would hook up to the wiring harness. https://www.holley.com/products/igni...ord/parts/8451 it will be important to figure out what type of dizzy you currently have in the 5.8 so we can set you down the proper path. FYI, i do not recommend using either of these distributors, the pics are just for reference. I hear good things about LUK clutches, unfortunately I haven't run a manual trans in years so much has probably changed. |
Thanks , I will look at the distributor and let you know. LUK is the front runner at this point.

is the 5.8 you have complete from upper intake to oil pan?

I checked the distributor and it has the harness like the one you show in the picture......so does the 302 in the 94 bronco. so that makes it a remote mounted tfi right? |

using brute power as a template you have the 93 F150 5.8 that calls for a FW9735 (our engine is a 10/92) BUT....the Bronco from 02/94 an on uses the FW9738...... Before this date it used a FW9735 and it is 164 teeth but only weighs 29 lbs the FW9738 is also 164 teeth BUT weighs 34 lbs! I am thinking the FW9735 that fits on the early engine is the right one .....but I sure could use a explanation.....I hate to try and try to return stuff. I am assuming they are all 28 oz because they are for the 351W and the 95 Bronco I have is the M5od r2 so it should fit. The bronco uses the 11 inch clutch so could that be the difference? Rick |

So the bronco is a 95 title with 11/94 build date and the xl didnt come with a 5.8 only a 5.0.

sorry i dont know enough about the manual trans/flywheel situation. I would get the same flywheel used in a 95 F250/F350 5.8/manual trans. all 5.8 motors from 94+ were roller cam motors. the F4TE stamp on passenger side near starter location of block should have a stamp.. the flywheel wont care what cam you have in there. Make sure your flywheel bolts are the correct length and use loctite.
I would rather us an 11" clutch for sure. |
