Closed knuckle Dana 44hd
I just bought a closed knuckle Dana 44hd out of a 75 highboy with full time 4x4 for my 71 highboy. My plan was to just use this axle temporarily until I can find a high pinion disk 44 for my 71. My question is since this is a heavy duty 44 (didn't realize that until I got home) is it as terrible as the small closed knuckle 44s? And do you think it was worth $200? It needs axle u-joints but that's not to big of a deal. Where's the best place to get them? Also it has full time hubs on it. I'm not too familiar with the external locking hubs (I think that's what this has) can it be changed to manual lockouts without changing the whole hub assembly? I'll add a few pictures when I get more service |
I believe (don't trust me) that it uses normal u joints for a driveshaft and that the hubs swap straight across

You can take the full time (always engaged) drive slugs off and replace them with manual locking hubs. The manual hubs for the 44CF HD are not as plentiful or as inexpensive as the non HD versions. I used the Warn Premium manual hubs on mine when I switched the transfer case from a 203 to a 205. Bronco Graveyard has the Warn hubs (P/N 9072) or Mile Marker (P/N 423). For what your going to do with the axle the MM hubs would probably be fine. They are a lot cheaper than the Warns. The manual hubs from a standard duty 44 won't work on the 44 HD, nor will the hubs from the HP axles.

I have the same axle, two of them actually. I am refreshing one to replace the other. I have the fulltime version and the part time version and am going back with the part time hubs when I put it back together.
A couple of things, the wiper seals are very expensive for the 12 bolt seals (150 a side unless you can find NOS on ebay) because Spicer quit making them a while back and the company that was making the aftermarket ones quit too and the prices went through the roof. Always double check before you buy them that they are 12 bolts.. there are a lot of 8 bolts out there listed with 12 bolt part numbers. Brake cylinders can be hard to find, but there are cross reference parts that work or there are a ton of NOS cylinders out there for $20 or so. They are a pretty decent axle except for the few hard to find parts. I like the closed knuckle design personally. They have the same size axle as a normal d44 with much larger u-joints in the knuckle than the light duty version. When set up right, the drums stop the truck great and have good feel. |
I messed around with the axle some tonight. Turns out only the passenger side u joint was put and it looks like the retainers were not put in correctly and came out at some time. I just swapped the whole shaft with one out of the small knuckle axle that cane out of the truck. Are the brake cylinders different between the regular and hd axles? I got the axle in the truck tonight but I need wheel cylinders, wheel seals, an axle u joint, brake hoses and free running hubs before I can finish putting it together. Most importantly wheel cylinders that I'm having trouble finding, I was going to rebuild the ones on there but they had two different bore sizes!! Does anyone have part numbers for those parts? |
Did you check out rock auto? When I redid the brakes on my 74 closed knuckle 44HD I rebuilt mine with parts from rock auto. You can buy the whole assembly.

There seems to be different sized bores for the cylinders. What's the correct size I should use. I used the complete rebuilt backing plates off my small knuckle 44 and everything seems the same except the wheel cylinders, I need the ones that take the hard line to fit around the larger knuckles. Both the rebuilt brakes that were for my small knuckle axle and the ones that I took off the large knuckle are 12 1/8 x 2". I find reference to both 15/16 and 1.06" bore brake cylinders. What are the correct ones for a 44hd with 12 1/8 X 2" power brakes? And out of curiosity what would the mc bore bc in that application? |

D3TZ 2262-D for the right hand side D3TZ 2261-D for the L/H side these cylinders have a bore of 1-1/16" . the master cylinders for all '73-'75 F250 4x4's are listed as having a 1" bore, & these also have different P/N's, depending on serial # &, for trucks with/without power brakes. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...1c459b4662.jpg Good luck with your project! |
I bought NOS front cylinders for mine. All the axle seals, king pin bearings, brake shoes, ujoints are readily available. Just trying to save bill a little time... ha! here is the listing he gave me for the same axle about a year ago... heads up the shop in waxahachie is down a set... ask me how I know. ;)
