'99 F-250 locker options

I live on a decent hill and am potentially interested in dropping a locker in my 2wd '99 F-250. It currently has 3.73's in the rear, but I wouldn't be opposed to going to a 4.10 or so because I've got the 5.4 under the hood. I'm thinking the cheapest way to go would be to steal a whole axle assembly from another SD that had an FX4 package or something. I would really like an e-locker that I can engage with a switch on the dash. Are there any SD's with an axle like that that would be an easy swap?

A few guys have Detroits and love them. Me included.

Im leaning on the Eaton truetrac. Google it. Its a really impressive unit. Especially if your doing a lot of in town driving.

Yup they work.. If you get a tire off the ground you'll have to play with the brakes. I don't have time for that foolishness.
I plow 20 customers. I can't tell it's back there. All I know is both wheels bite all the time. Just got a grizzly for the front to replace the lock right.

I didn't know about the brake thing. I thought both tires had constant forward power. Ill have to do some more reading on them. Thanks for the heads up. Why did you replace the lock rite?

Too noisy and I might have broke a spring in it. The Grizzly is basically a Detroit so I got it... And at 1/2 price.. so no brainer.
Also I have a dana 50 up front and Detroit doesn't make one for that axle.

True trac is great, never know its there. No more one wheel peel pulling into traffic on wet roads, dirt roads and snow are no problem. No switch to turn on, just works.

While the design of the truetrac requires there to be some traction to both wheels in order to transfer traction and therefor requires you to play with the brakes if one wheel is off the ground, how often are you hanging a tire in mid air in a super duty? Not saying there aren't people who do and maybe you're one of them IDK. Realistically though, a truetrac should be more than sufficient for most super duty owners and without the loading/popping etc that is often found with a true auto locker. If you are going to go through the expense of having either installed I'd recommend getting a gear change at the same time. You're already going to be paying for the labor and only have to regear the rear end. Might as well make the most of it. I don't know what size tires you're running, but I'd take a hard look at 4.30's. It sounds like a lot of gear, but it was a OEM option on a lot of trucks. I had them in my last V10 and have 3.73's in this one. It's a noticeable difference. I much preferred the 4.30's and they (and the truetrac) are on my list.

I regeared to 4.10’s and installed a Truetrac in my 2wd Dually. The difference is night and day. The benefits of a Truetrac is that there’s no speed limits to which it will engage, no clutches to wear out either.

I'm also in the truetrac club...love it...there when you need it but no clanging/binding making turns...no clutches to wear out like in the factory setup

I have a truetrac in my crown vic. With one tire on slick mud, the opposite tire will leave a black strip on dry concrete when I tromp the gas. So I'm guessing you'd about need one tire completely off the ground or on wet ice in order for the opposite tire to do nothing.

ok...not to be cynical or anything but there has to be a downside somewhere in the tru-trac
:-huh

how much did that change RPM at 60 MPH.. do you find you are not having to push button to disengage OD for hills/ long pulls etc. ?? thinking of doing this as well.. 4.10 and TT

I haven’t seen any, it’s on when I need it and off when I don’t. There’s no chatter, noise nothing. I have a 2wd Dually so before the Truetrac I’d get stuck on wet flat grass...seriously.

‘I see about 200 rpm increase across the board more or less. Well, for hills I’m able to leave the overdrive on but for long mountain passes I take the OD off and rpms up to control EGT’s. Keep in mind that I’m at 6500’ and 99.9% of my travel goes to higher elevation 11,000’ +. I’m dealing with thinner air which really robs power... If I’m DD, I can still drive 85 if I wanna without any where near redlining it.

Thats pretty impressive. Did you install the gears and true track yourself? How hard was it to do?
