IPR at 65% once warmed up
So I finally got my GEM/fuse block fixed and I was able to hook up to torque pro and diagnose an issue with a SEL on acceleration when warm and then a lack of power and here is what I found.
Once the oil reached around 180 deg the IPR goes to 65% with any acceleration and even when cruising at over about 1800 rpm. This seems to happen almost like flipping a switch. When the IPR is at 65% the icp is only around 1000. I checked the icp sensor and there is no oil in it. I also checked the oil in hpop resivour and it is about an inch from the top but if the lpop was bad I'm not sure if it would "catch up" when I slowed down to pull it in the shop. When the issue is happening there is no smoking issues, the truck just has no power. I am not sure if the IPR was sticking if the gauge would read 65% even it was actually stuck open or not. It seems odd to me that the symptoms come on so quickly. I did just have 4 injector cups and one injector as well as all new injector O rings replaced on the driver's side. I have a hose and fittings ordered to check the hpop and check for injector leaks. Do you think these symptoms areore likely an icp, IPR or hpop issur? Thanks for any advice. Mike |
Can you shut it off and restart it when it’s warmed up? Is the tin nut on the IPR tight? The 65% Duty cycle reading is a command from the PCM, but doesn’t mean the IPR is complying. It sounds like either a weak HPOP, IPR stuck open, or a failed/rolled injector O Ring. |
It does restart when hot. I'm leaning toward the shop doing a poor job of installing the injector O rings. I'll probably pull the valve cover off the driver's side and check for leaks. Will they only leak if warm or do they leak all the time generally? I suppose I could put an IPR in it but I hate to waste $150 if that's not it.

When I had failed O rings, it would start fine when the oil was cold and thick, but wouldn’t build enough pressure while cranking with warm, thin oil. Make sure the tin nut and spare are on the IPR. You shouldn’t be able to move the IPR coil back and forth unless either the spacer is missing, or the nut is loose. |
I pulled the passengers side vc and I started the truck. It looks like there's oil running out where the injector meets the head on every injector so I'm not sure it this is exactly what I'm looking for or if that's normal. I'm going to try and upload the video to my son's YouTube account and see if I can share a link. In what areas is it normal and abnormal for oil to be coming in under the VC?

That looks like failed upper, square O rings. It’s possible they got rolled during installation. I pulled the #6 injector and inspected the seals and they look fine. I need new o-rings for the two drain plugs in the head before I put it back together. I think what I'm seeing is the oil that misses the exhaust port and runs down around the base of the injector. I may start it with the exhaust port off and see if oil still runs from around d the injector.

#2 is the one I would pull judging by the amount of oil running past it. If you run it with the deflector removed, it’s gonna shoot oil everywhere. |

You don’t need any special hoses to check for O ring leaks. Just disconnect the HPO line from the drivers side head and blow 100+ psi of shop air and look for bubbles around the injectors. Most blow guns have a rubber tip that’ll seal to the fitting in the head. If you have an HPX installed, that will have to be blocked off to prevent air pressure from going to the passenger side. Do a search for “Cody Test” on here. |
Couldn't a guy remove the hpop line to one head and screw a hose in there with a gauge and a shutoff and put 100 lbs of shop air to it then turn off the valve and let it set and monitor the amount of pressure on the gauge before pulling the vc?
