MOONROOF PROBLEMS

I read few other treads on this Super Duty forum and it seems there have been some problems with the moonroof option? I plan on purchasing this option in a 2019 is this a bad option to have? Do they leak frequently? Does the track get stuck?

Ben Elliott 12-01-2018 07:54 PM

Yes, there are some that have had problems but I have a 19 and have had no such problems. We had 15” of rain 2 weeks ago and about 5” today and dry as can be. I HAVE taken the advice of many on here when I was waiting for my truck to crack the moonroof or “vent” it before opening it. I could see how that would help.

MadeInDade 12-02-2018 03:53 AM

You're always going to hear the negative. Nobody is going to start a thread discussing how well their moonroof works. I have a '17, and I was apprehensive about the moonroof. I didn't want it, but the truck I bought off the lot had it. I've had zero issues with it. It has worked flawlessly for me.

PS. I also tinted my moonroof which a lot of people on here will tell you causes it to shatter in the heat. That's BS. I live in one of the most heat and sun intensive parts of the country and my roof is still intact.

mirageone 12-02-2018 04:47 AM

I was also apprehensive, go it on 2018 Lariat with dark leather. I llike it, really makes the interior feel open and bright. No problems at all with the unit for almost a year now. I live in South Florida and was worried about how hot it might make the cab, it does to some extent but its easliy controled by the ac, will tint it at some point but I am not in a hurry.

zeroo 12-02-2018 06:00 AM

The sticking occurs. Its best to open the vent when they have not been opened for a wile, its a safer way to un-stick it. Opening it with a sticking seal can pop the track. I noticed my 2017 sticking last summer and got the ford weather seal lube and it was good. The sun can bake the seal I guess. My 2015 stuck a little too but its smaller and it doesn't effect it like it does these huge roofs. These roofs are great and a little maintenance is expected.

cficare 12-02-2018 08:11 AM

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that it's also prudent to clean out the drain tubes on some sort of regular timeframe. When they clog, water backs up and falls inside. After reading about the various panoramic roof issues, it became a deal-breaker to me. My dealer could not locate a KR equipped with LED/BLIS, 20" machined wheels and no pano-roof, so ordering one was my only option. The ultimate package did not interest me because it included chrome bumpers and mirror caps, and I'm no fan of chrome.

Bingo for me too. I don't want the pano roof but would enjoy the multi-contour (massaging seats). Seems like you can only get these seats in the ultimate packages which means you get the pano roof. I don't think the chrome is standard in the KR ultimate package, at least in the 19's. I may just get the ultimate package and over tint the pano roof. I'm in central Texas and really don't care to have the sun beat on my neck...I actually get in my truck to avoid it!

No leaks here so far. Only had it a month, but it's been like a damn monsoon the entire month.

17 Oaks 12-02-2018 08:35 AM

‘11, ‘15, ‘17 & ‘19. Never a leak, never an issue, never used it either. Waste of money IMO.

A&Pmech 12-02-2018 08:44 AM

Anybody ever try this on the sunroof tracks and seals:

Also problem with them breaking the glass. More than one thread on it. I have had nothing but trouble with Ford moon roofs. My current truck has one just because I could not find one with everything on it BUT the moon roof. It will never be opened just hope it does not break the glass!

I`m sure there are more positive experiences with the Pano roof compared to negative experiences. With that being said, is this something you really need or want because once you have it and if you were to have problems with it, the novelty wears off quickly. Also, how often would you really use it. Personally, it`s just not worth it. Save to cash and spend it on a nice quality tint job and other accessories.

Flyct 12-02-2018 03:52 PM

I never had a roof leak in any of my 5 Ford trucks from 2014-2019. But then again I made sure that I did't buy a truck with a Moon or Sunroof after learning a lesson on my 2000 Expedition.

The last ford product I had with a Sunroof was a 2000 Expedition. One night I left the sunroof open and it rained all night. I had to replace all the leather interior and carpeting due to water damage. After that I said never again.

the pano roofs have a 100% sunshade that is powered that will cover the length of the pano roof so if you don’t the sun to come in you just push a Button and a sunshade the same fabric as the roof liner will cover it.

That's true. I've also heard of several posters here (mostly Texans) add some sort of tint because that space between the glass and the sunshade becomes a hot, shallow oven.

RandyinTN 12-02-2018 07:52 PM

When I was searching for a replacement truck for my Ford buy back the one stipulation was the truck did not have a moon roof. I see no reason to burden myself with an option that has such a high failure rate and could be expensive to repair.
That's my two cents.

Mkos1980 12-02-2018 07:58 PM

No issues on my 19... then again I've never opened it yet as it's been mostly in the 20s since I got the truck....

sc954rr 12-02-2018 08:11 PM

Have an 2018 with no issues so far and maybe opened it a dozen times or so, plus it has been raining like crazy last two months with no leaks.

Are you talking about the panoramic roof of just a standard moon roof? I have the standard moon roof and have had no problems. I have read some threads about the panoramic moon roof leaking.

SCOTTx88 12-03-2018 06:00 AM

Ordered my 19 with it, It's rained since I've had it,pretty much every/other day. No leaks or issues, But ditto on the sliding cover, close it, No sun.

hansenlink 12-03-2018 10:12 AM

Have had them on my 15 Sorento, 15 Explorer, 17 Super Duty, and wife's 15 Lincoln MKC. Not one issue. And for the me the novelty has not worn off and would not consider a vehicle without it. Really opens up the interior.

Dockmaster1 12-03-2018 10:37 AM

I have it on my 17. I had problems and the track broke (I did a thread on here about that). The dealer replaced the track and despite the track issue I love the panoramic roof and would order again. I don't drive my truck daily and it is parked in a garage so obviously this helps. I really like the amount of light coming in especially since my truck is black on black.

SESWIM 12-03-2018 12:05 PM

No leaking or sticking here. No issues at all.
Sam

Mixerman90 12-03-2018 05:38 PM

My 17 has a pano roof. I love it. I had it for about 2 years before I had problems. It started out by sticking and then popping. Then "crunch"! That was it. It was all kitty wampus and wouldn't close straight. Dealer replaced the whole frame and track system under warranty.

GoldenDomer 12-07-2018 07:25 AM

Well, it finally happened. I thought I was one of the lucky ones as I've had my truck since last July, almost 18 months and yesterday my son noticed water dripping off the handle on the passenger side front seat. Don't know if the hose is clogged or somehow disconnected but I put a bucket in the floor overnight and thank god I did. The floor would have been standing in water had the bucket not been there. Time to get in to the shop.

telly9987 12-12-2018 12:44 AM

No leaks and no sticking on mine. Had the truck 2 months now and live in SoCal and am out in the desert quite a lot. No sticking issues.... Truck gets washed and detailed every other week and no water leaks noticed either.

bushpilot 12-12-2018 06:03 AM

'17 Platinum here - purchased in April 2017 - no problem w/ the roof. The truck sits outside when parked and has seen 100s of inches of TEXAS hurricane level rain.
I tinted mine to help keep the heat out a little - for those times I forget to close the sun shade. The ford factory sun shade makes a huge difference in keeping the heat out.

Living in S Tex, there ain't enough tint to put on it that will stop the heat...BUT what does is at Home Depot they carry rolls of reflective bubble insulation. I had some left over from the insulation of the 2 nd floor stairwell and I cut a couple of pieces to fit and slid them in over the shade between it and the glass, works GREAT...

TireFryer426 12-12-2018 11:05 AM

I was in the same boat. Didn't want the moon roof. Ordered a Lariat Ultimate minus that option. For some unknown reason, the truck showed up with a moon roof.
And I actually kind of like it now. Haven't had any issues with it.

D3thM3tal 12-12-2018 12:51 PM

I love the extra head room, the light and it sure is a wow factor when getting in the truck. I love it and wouldn't be without it.

BigTexDiesal 12-12-2018 02:04 PM

Pano roof was last thing I wanted but it was a left over 2017 in correct color and options I wanted. I love opening the shade but not the roof. Especially in the winter. My plan was to never open the roof, if you don't highly unlikely you will ever have an issue. That being said on a nice clear dry day I open it, lol. I have had sunroofs in past. Never opened them, always hated them and here I am with another. Maybe we boycott all cars with sunroofs and the manufactures will stop pushing them down are throats.

NWnative 12-12-2018 02:04 PM

I specifically ordered my 2019 without the sunroof based on the numerous issues reported on this forum and the F150 forum. I never really used it anyway....one less thing to have issues with.

JD'sBigredv10 12-12-2018 02:22 PM

The sunroof on my 2016 F150 was repaired under warranty but that would not detract me from ordering one...actually it didn't because I have the same sunroof on my Super Duty. I love to have mine open.I do believe that these panoramic sunroofs may be disproportionately problematic but if you are looking at trucks where it's an option, there are probably lots of fancy features that could break. My truck is so complicated that I am certain that at some point there will be problems with some of the features. Almost everything is fancy and prone to failure in 2018!

A&Pmech 12-31-2018 06:10 PM

So a couple weeks ago my sunroof was completely stuck, would not slide back at all. I had press the vent button and it popped very hard and then I could slide it back. So I ordered a tube of this door ease and I finally received it today. Although I just applied it I could immediately tell a difference. Before, it would always have a slight pop, even immediately after closing it. Now, it's nice and smooth. Hopefully, it'll stay that way even after going awhile after uses.

2019er 06-04-2021 06:04 AM

Update, mine is having issues now. About 30k miles on it, with a three month cross country road trip planned. I don't dare let them try to fix it now since we head out in two weeks. It's closed, and will stay that way til we return. But will be out of warranty by then. Can I put in the claim now and have the work done later? Ha, wait, I'll call the Ford dealer and ask them. I just don't want to let them out of my sight with my truck. I don't want things fixed other than what I tell them to fix. I don't care about other recalls, etc. They aren't causing issues.

SRock123 06-10-2021 10:38 AM

My Raptor track broke and my 2017 Superduty leaks and the dealer has tried 2 times to fix it. The local dealer, Pompano Ford, told me since I am in Florida which gets heavy rain they will leak on occasion and this is completely normal. Yes that is what I was told...and it let to an ensuing BS argument but they stood their ground on the comment. If I park nose down I get water through the headliner switches, if it's very slightly uphill no water. Having rarely used the Raptor sunroof I only got the one on the Superduty because the package of options I wanted was less expensive. What a mistake. Personally I think the big sunroofs are stupid in South Florida. Between hot temps, sun, and traffic noise they are not so great.

shadowSVT 06-10-2021 12:13 PM

My 05 had a sunroof.
My 08 had a sunroof.
My 11 had a sunroof.
I've was never a sunroof fan before the 05, but after having to convertible Mustangs, I felt that I needed a sunroof, and bought trucks with the sunroofs.
I didn't have any problems with any of them, and they were used almost daily! I'd say that my 11 had the sunroof cracked open 85% of its life - Hope in, turn key, open sunroof, fasten seat belt, drive.
So I ordered my 21 with the pano sunroof, and me and the wife love it.
Only sunroof I've ever had a problem with was in a Pontiac, but I had problems with EVERYTHING in that rolling pile of crap.
One of my best friends does auto glass and always shakes his head at me when I get a vehicle with a sunroof....But I think these are much better than the ones in the past, or anything GM has to offer.

SRock123 06-10-2021 01:34 PM

I can tell you in Florida it is extremely rare, like .00001 times do I seen a sunroof open on any car. Must be our weather.

shadowSVT 06-10-2021 02:36 PM

Must be the weather.....
Not much rain here. I've even left it open (cracked, not wide open) during light rain without getting any water inside.

Having lived in the South Florida area I agree. The last sunroof I had was in my new 2000 Ford Expedition. At that time the model I wanted had a sunroof standard. I left it open one night and we had torrential rains. What a mess. Destroyed the leather seats.

Every Suoerduty I’ve had since required a special order to get the options I wanted WITHOUT a sunroof.
