Oil Minder and Mileage at First Oil Change

Hello All, i am curious as to what your mileage was when the minder told you that your first oil change was needed. There has been a lot of talk here before on letting the initial oil go until the minder tells you too change it due too break in fluids, some say that there is no such fluids and the battle rages. My mileage is getting up there and still no minder saying its time...... sooooo i am real curious about what mileages you all have seen, those of you that waited for the minder to say they needed a change.

Thanks in Advance Pat

What percentage does your oil life monitor show?

1024F250 11-20-2018 05:24 PM

I did mine at the dealer yesterday at 6250 with no indicator. I was at about 20 %. I went ahead and threw a jug of blue def in as well.

No oil % read-out on 2017+ Super Duties unless you use forscan to activate. You only get a "Change Oil" soon and a "Change Oil Now" indication.

My 2011 King Ranch F150 showed % oil life - liked that much more.

I add 2.5 gal of DEF whenever the DEF gage shows about 50%. I usually but two jugs of Blue DEF at Autozone when they are on sale. I use one then and have the second one for later. If the DEF gage is at 50% I don't have to worry about not being able to use the full 2.5 gal (hate to store an open jug).

2019 trucks have the percentage.

My "Change Oil Soon" light came on early (around 2500 miles) - not 100% sure why so early - probably because the 2017 I purchased had been on the dealer's lot and was right at one year from the build date when started getting the message. I went ahead and changed the oil, but I see no problem waiting until the light comes on. Depending on how you drive, you will probably get the light around 7500 miles.

Of course oil change intervals usually generated pages-and-pages of "I change the oil every 3000 miles", "wait for the light", "I change every 5000 miles and if you do anything else you are a dumb-a$$", and so on. Changing oil when the change message comes on works for me and keeps the Ford warranty intact. Is changing oil sooner better, probably, but I don't think by much. Oils and engines are pretty well engineered and Ford has a good idea of how often oil should be changed to maintain the engine. Of course their primary goal is to get the engine through the warranty period and be somewhat environmentally responsible. Do what you are comfortable with, but I wouldn't go much longer than when the message comes on. I also try to monitor when my oil change is getting close (once again the % read-out would be nice (need to get forscan) so that the change message isn't going to come on during a long trip.

That is great. I know that the 2017 and 2018 trucks do not unless the dealer turns it on for you or you use forscan to change the setting. Ford should default to oil % being available.

They probably had a bunch of complaints about the lack of oil life monitor. On the 2019 if you go to the oil life reset it gives you the percentage and just hit "ok" to reset.

Yeah Jim i hear ya thats what i mean by the battle goes on....im more interested on what people are seeing if they wait for the minder to tell them, dont care what people say, they can hide behind their keyboard and sling names around i dont care......i dont think that is what this forum is for, im at 9k with no minder alert, oil level is good but it just seems like a lot of miles to me. Thats why im asking what people have seen if they waited for the minder to tell them.
