Repair question

I had my dealer replaced a front u-joint last week. Over the weekend I found I had no 4wd with the hubs in auto mode but did have traction when I locked the front hubs.
Bad u-joint install?

The auto hubs are vacuum operated. They may have not connected the vacuum line? I would take it back and ask them what they did to prevent 4x4 operation.

Yep, Vacuum pump is gone or not connected.

Thank you. It's going back Monday morn.
Not fun to encounter a foot of snow and find out my 4WD has an issue.

You can lock them in manually until you get it fixed.

This is one place I'm glad they kept the manual option.

Agreed. I ended up doing that to get moving.

Hopefully they get it sorted out for you. I have had to replace the front axle seal a few times, when they leak (or any other leak in the vacuum system) the system can't pull vacuum to lock the hubs. It is usually an easy fix, although replacing the front axle seal does involve some labour...

Dealer service called me. The axle seal failed, covered under warranty.

What year truck and how many miles?

MG250 11-27-2018 07:12 AM

2015 with 83k on it.

Good news is they can replace the seal...bad news is every time the dealership puts the truck into 4wd auto it blows out the seal again.
Any thoughts?

Good luck solving your issue. That's definitely weird alright.

Check for a plugged vent line. Diff pressures up when driven?

If that's the case, then the seal should also blow when the hubs are set to Locked, right?

Superdave71 11-29-2018 12:21 PM

It’s a vacuum pulse signal to pull in the hubs in 4x4 auto, so it shouldn’t blow anything, or build pressure, and the vent is on the diff, which is a separate chamber/part of the axle. I’d guess that some moving part within the hub is installed backwards or in the wrong Seanad is pushing the seal. But back to what Jim said, if it occurs when they’re manually engaged that points to an assembly issue.
