Excursion 7.3 purchase advice

Hello all:

i am am looking to purchase a 2003 Excursion 7.3 diesel and am looking for advice. The vehicle is very clean cosmeticly inside and out but has 299k. It runs and drives very well.
what kind of issues have you all run into or should I expect with this vehicle? And major potential repair concerns? I am planning to daily drive it roughly 50 miles and will not be towing. Any thoughts or advice on this would be appreciated. The price would be $11,950. Also, let me know if you would buy this vehicle.

thanks!

If you have any pictures of the vehicle, that would help us point you in the right direction.

If your only concern is the 299,000 miles, don't let it be. The 7.3 diesel engine is a very robust and long lasting engine if cared for properly. The problem is, the vehicle and parts around the engine start to fall apart.

I will hold my vote until we have more information and/or pictures to go off of. Some of the questions you should ask yourself are below.

1. Does it start easy on a cold day without being plugged in?
2. Does it pass the oil cap upside down test?
3. Any major repairs to the engine or transmission (these are not necessarily deal breakers, but should be done properly)?
4. Is it lifted?
5. Is the engine/undercarriage reasonably clean?
6. How does the transmission fluid look/smell?
7. Does it have any aftermarket parts (again, not a deal breaker, but there is a right way and then there is the wrong way)?
8. Reason for sale?
9. Region of the country the vehicle spent the majority of its life?
10. Strange noises or behavior that the owner claims as "normal"?

Thanks! Please see below:

1. Does it start easy on a cold day without being plugged in?
Would have to ask
2. Does it pass the oil cap upside down test?
need to check
3. Any major repairs to the engine or transmission (these are not necessarily deal breakers, but should be done properly)?
none noted
4. Is it lifted?
No, don’t think it ever was either.
5. Is the engine/undercarriage reasonably clean?
very clean, a little surface rust but clean wheel wells. Nothing bad at all. Was a NC truck.
6. How does the transmission fluid look/smell?
need to check
7. Does it have any aftermarket parts (again, not a deal breaker, but there is a right way and then there is the wrong way)?
none, just a new grill and headlights
8. Reason for sale?
not sure, it’s at a small used car dealer. They have very good online ratings
9. Region of the country the vehicle spent the majority of its life?
north carolina
10. Strange noises or behavior that the owner claims as "normal"?
none, they report it runs and drives very well, no noises, knocks, or anything like that

let me know if the pics uploaded

Being a NC vehicle any chance it got flooded?

Sous 11-12-2018 03:10 PM

Exterior looks good, do you have any under the hood pictures by chance?

To me, those seats look WAY too new for 299K miles. I would still do a strong visual inspection for evidence of flood damage.

The Carfax does look clean. With an average of over 18K miles per year as a commercial vehicle, you may just have a really good vehicle. Inspect the towing gear to see if it shows a lot of use on the wiring adapters and inside the hitch receiver.

I’ll check thanks

That paint looks pretty good for a vehicle that age too, has it been repainted? Look hard for things that have been covered up.

2nd owner drove it 3k miles in 11 months and wants to sell? Price seems north of good but not extreme. It does appear super clean, but as someone pointed out, those seats don't look used. Things don't add up for me. Not saying I wouldn't buy it, but I would definitely be spending a painstaking amount of time inspecting it myself.

the recent profesional detail job that makes it look “clean” cost $300 to do...... a 7.3 that needs injectors will run you $3500 and a trans $4500. get service records when these were done and pay to have a 7.3 knowledgeable mechanic do a complete pre purchase inspection. if it passes the indpection and the trans and snjectors were done within 100k thrn yes i would buy it.

I'd be on that like a hobo on a hotdog. If it runs well, drives as you say, and you don't have a 2 inch long fingernail to scratch on a used vehicle............

Do the above mentioned research and don't be afraid of the mileage.

They are very hard to come by at any rate. If that's original paint, cudos. I believe the seats are questionable, but whatever. Looks like they were done with high end taste involved.

Homework!

Great looker and performer if things pan out. Hope to see you a regular in here soon.

BTW, the price in Michigan would be about 7k. Only because it still has door handles that aren't rotting off.

I also see "Limited" embroidered in the upper seats" as well as power on the pass seat. Has to be an upscale model as I have never been in a ford super that has that. But I live in the North.

Here is the dealer site: https://www.samanddavesauto.com/445_...MITED-for-sale

I'm thinking it's the Limited Ultra package (I believe that's what it is called). If so, it will have radio controls on the steering wheel, memory seats, and homelink.
I kind of agree with everyone else about the front seats. If you check out the photo of the second row they look to have more wear than the fronts.
