Special Order F250/350 Payload Capability?

Hi!

Newbie here. I just pulled the trigger on a Hallmark Guanella (8') slide-in camper (Delivery end of March, 2019). With the options ordered, I'm estimating the dry weight at 1725 lbs. Fully loaded and on the road, I'm estimating between 3,000 and 3,500 lbs. So, now I need to buy the truck to carry the camper. My biggest concern is making sure I have enough payload and under the front/rear GAWR. I'm almost for sure going to special order new as I haven't seen anything anywhere that gets close to what I'm looking for:

2019 F250 or F350 SRW
4X4
3.73 Axle Ratio
Super Cab
6.75' Bed (I'm getting the Work Box options on the camper, so can't use the 8' bed)
6.2 Gasser
Camper Package
Extra Extra Heavy Duty Alternator
And a few other non-critical options (I'm thinking XLT trim level, with Sync 3 and the 400 Watt Inverter)

Will add Torq Lift Stabiloads (Lower) after delivery and some aftermarket running boards/steps). I will upgrade to Hellwig Big Wig sway bars (from the OEM sway bars that come with the camper package) down the road if I'm not happy with the OEM sways.

I've been through the Ford website builder many times and done a good amount of research on the web. I'm concerned that I will get the payload that I need. The Ford website lists the "Maximum Payload Package Selector" for this configuration as 3470 to 3570 lbs for the F250 and 3,300 to 3,400 lbs for the F350.

My question: If I special order my truck, how can I be sure I will get these payloads or near to these payloads (and the front/rear GAWR). Does the payload print out on your order sheet or confirmation when you special order? I need an almost rock solid guarantee from the dealer that I will get close to these payloads.

Smaller question: I will be removing the tailgate. Any recommendations for an aftermarket camera that I can connect to the tailgate camera connector (which I understand is under the truck close to the spare) and place on the back of the camper? I'm looking for something that is essentially "factory integrated" into the center console/Sync 3 system ... just like the tailgate camera only on the back of the camper. I would prefer wired all the way.

Any help with these two issues (or other words of advice/recommendations) would be most helpful!

Have a GREAT DAY all ..

Preston

Refreshing this post. I think it got buried yesterday. Still trying to find out what my payload will be BEFORE I actually order the vehicle. Thanks

There is a long thread somewhere on this forum where people have posted their configuration and payload stickers. Someone probably has something posted similar to what you're building.

I think you are a bit low with your estimates for the F350 though. My King Ranch has a 4150# payload despite being a heavier crew cab long bed with more features than an XLT. I honestly think it would be difficult to spec a 350 gasser to under 3500 lb payload assuming no derate sticker packages.

Look at / find the yellow door weight stickers of similar trucks, ( eg XLvs Lariat ) to estimate payload, many posts on here already with that info. My 2018 XLT CCSB 6.2 4x4 is 3229 lbs ( with camper package) Also attached file details how options / tires etc effect payloads..

Thanks for the quick replies!

That attached file looks like it will have the information I need complemented with the threads with the weight stickers. It would be nice if Ford had a payload calculator app to make things a bit simpler and more accurate. Unfortunately, my conversations with the dealers have been useless. They just keep quoting "Maximum Payload" numbers. I just have this recurring nightmare (ok, maybe a bit of an overstatement) that I drop $50K and the truck shows up and the sticker says 2,200 lbs ....

This will be my first purchase of a "real" truck and camper and I just don't want any surprises. You gentlemen have been helpful. Thanks!

Your payload will be about 3,100 on an F250 in that configuration. 1,000 more on an F350. Looks like you need a 350.

Try using the attached camper spec PDF. I'd think you'd would want a F350. Why not to get max payload possible?

Preston,

First off, kudos to you for looking to specify and order a truck that will meet your realistic load requirements. I recommend you consider an F350 4x4 6.2 with the optional 4.30 axle ratio, 18” wheels and tires, the camper package, and the XXHD alternator.

Our F350's curb weight is ~6600 lbs., and our slide-in truck camper's alleged wet weight is 2200 lbs. Combined, that's 8800 lbs. However, when we loaded up the camper for a recent trip and then put three adults and a dog into the cab, the gross weight was 10,700 lbs. People, the dog, our stuff, and the bed mat, tie-downs, and turnbuckles weighed 1,900 lbs. It's no wonder I was a bit sore after loading everything into the truck and camper...

Here's a link to the 2019 Super Duty specs.

The 2019 F350 SCSB 6.2 4x4 with 18” wheels and AT tires in base (XL) trim with no accessories or options has a maximum payload spec of 4640 lbs. The options you mentioned will likely cost you 200 – 300 lbs., so I'd expect your payload stick to read something in the 4350 - 4400 lbs. range. Excellent!

Don't get the slightly smaller A/S tires, even if you plan to change them, as their lower load capacity will reduce the official sticker payload by ~400 lbs. On the other hand, removing the tailgate may buy you an extra 70 – 100 lbs. of payload.

Both of our F350s were special order. For reference, our 2019 F350's official max payload spec is 4200 lbs. As configured, the sticker reads 3912 lbs.:

Just checked out my 6.2 F350 Lariat CCSB 4x4 I picked up Saturday. Its pretty loaded up with most heavy options including the 5th wheel package. With the 18' wheels my sticker read 4,008 lbs

I've had my Hallmark guanella for about a year-and-a-half. I typically have either bicycles or motorcycle mounted off the rear receiver or I tow a small 4 rail trailer. I had a 2011 F-350XL 6.2 3.73 CCLB 17" tires. Last January I ordered a new 2018, basically the same equipment except I went 4.30 rear end. I'm super pleased. I don't install balloon tires and big wheels, and I really like the 6r140 tranny that comes with the F-350 gasser. The advantage of ordering a 17-in wheel equipped f350 is you get a pretty soft spring pack in the rear, but with really heavy overload Springs. Stock my truck worked perfectly with the exception that base OEM shocks on the rear did not have enough damping when driving loaded, so I slapped a set of Fox 2.0 on the rear. I am super pleased w
ith my new truck. Feel free to ask any questions.....

MBuckholz 11-13-2018 12:14 PM

Some folks are worried about the 4.30 being geared too short. I have not been able to tell a significant difference in economy it's got to be less than a half a mile per gallon from my old truck

IdahoIV 11-13-2018 12:29 PM

The 3300# & 3400# numbers you quoted are only for the F350 if you order it with the reduced payload option 9900/10000. I ordered my xlt 6.2 4.30 crewcab gasser without the reduced payload option and it was spec'd at 11,300# GVWR. Based on ford's maximum payload selector, with the 11,300# GVWR my maximum possible payload was 4480#, I ended up with a little less than 4200#. When I got the printout from the dealer to verify the options I ordered, the payload section was on the sheet. Hope this helps.

Jim:

Thanks for the information. Really appreciated the 2019 specifications sheet.

It sounds like we are quite close on our configuration. I'm estimating my wet camper weight at 2,155 lbs (versus your "alleged" weight of 2,200 lbs) and was estimating another 1,000 lbs for two passengers, a dog at some point and "stuff". I'm planning on removing the tailgate and the rear seats (extra storage space). However, I can appreciate how you load "grew" over time ... so having the extra margin is great.

Initially I have been looking at the F250 4X4 SCSB with a Base Curb Weight of 6,360 lbs. My estimate of truck options (including 18" wheels as you suggest, camper package, ski plates, etc.) was another 250 lbs ... so I was estimating the weight of the truck at about 6,600 to 6,700 lbs. With a GVWR of 10,000 lbs, that gives me a payload of about 3,400 lbs .... not a lot of margin!

It looks like you were able to buy the F350 4X4 SCSB 6.2 with a 11,400 lb GVWR (or at least higher than 10,000 lbs)? The "configurator" on the Ford website does not allow me to increase the F350 to the 11,400 lb GVWR without adding the 6.7 Diesel .... which I don't want to do. How did you do this? How much extra cost was it to increase the GVWR to 11,400 with the 6.2 Gasoline engine?

Also, I assume that with the F250 the maximum GVWR is 10,000 lbs .... is that correct?

You have convinced me that the F350 4X4 SCSB, 6.2 with the higher GVWR is the way to go (gives me the margin so I don't have to worry every time I add something to the truck or camper) .... I just need to find the extra pennies to make this work.

Again, thanks for the information. I think I'm getting pretty close. I plan on pulling the trigger before end of the month to give time for up to 12 week build.

Thanks,

preston

Idaho/Jim/MBuckholz:

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I went back to the Ford "configurator" (again) and for the F350 SCSB 4X4, 6.2 it does not let me go to a higher GVWR than 10,000 lbs without adding the 6.7 Diesel ...

I'm still doing some research on the 4.3 versus 3.73 axle ratio option. I understand there is a small loss in MPG. What are the advantages in a truck camper/heavy load situation?

Thanks,

Preston
