86 Club Wagon E150 Dash Electrical Questions
Hi All! Well , I'm new to the world of Ford. I'm a previous jeep owner, but I bought this E150 as a vanlife conversion project. So I have a few things I'm trying to figure out. Any info is much appreciated Here's a list: Dash lights (and overhead light) not working. I've done some searches and am going to try changing some switches out but where can I find diagrams for the wiring and fuses? Wipers don't work (maybe its the motor or its related to the dash lights?) None of the door electrical works. (windows and mirrors) these could also be switch related Cruise control also not working. Side note -someone put in a toggle switch and it doesn't seem to do anything, but maybe this messed something up? (I will get pics later) Thats it for now, Im excited to start working on it! edit - attaching a pic of the “ribbon” electrical wiring that’s on the back side of the dash controls. Where the long plug goes in the connectors are part,y worn and peeling off. Is there a fix or replacement. What’s that even called? Thanks!! |

Your best bet at this point is securing a Ford EVTM or book of schematics---I find most of mine through eBay---this could be something useful: 86 E150 EVTM. The issues you describe need to be diagnosed per schematics, more than likely none of them are switch related as much as blown fuses or a bad connection at a plug or inside a wiring harness.
The dash and over head light is probably related to the main headlight switch---the photo of the backside of the cluster doesn't show anything problematic. The small bit of wear on the foil traces are typical---they're not causing any of your issues. The only real "repair" of that cluster is another part, also found through eBay. Of course since you have it out already replace all the bulbs. Before you start jumping in with a full interior build out make sure the van as a vehicle is mechanically sound and dependable. |
I couldn't agree more with JWA, since the '80's manufacturer's service manuals have served me well. From Kawasaki's to Jeep CJ "Black Betty" the manuals (from Ford) for my old '81 E 150 "Easy Bake" that departed due to a scheissekerl running a stop sign just to get ahead of me.

One element that has also worked well, was adding a dedicated ground strip linked to the negative battery terminal, the run all of my grounds that I can find to it.

7 pin vs 9 pin? Pulling my hair out
So I bought a new headlight switch from o'reilly auto. it had 9 pins and mine has 7. So i tried to order the one they have listed as 7 pin but it came in as 9 pin. Then I went to pick n pull yesterday and I looked at every van even the ones that weren't a match to my years and all of them had 9 pins. One other thing to mention is that my fuse box all the connectors are really rusty. all the fuses look good so I'm not sure if its the contacts? I tried to pull a fuse box at the wreckers but they are clearly not plug and play. (the words are also all worn on mine) :( I'm very frustrated. I need to get the dash working. I'm wondering if someone rewired that switch into the system. It didn't look like there was anything like that going on with my wiring, but I do have this weird toggle switch that I mentioned and it doesn't do anything. I am no good with electrical and don't want to bother messing with it if it isn't simple.

Head lamp switch: 1980/83 & 1984 before production date 2/84 is one type (Marked: D2AB-11654-A1A). 1984 from production date 2/84 and 1985/86 is different (Marked: E0EB-11654-AA). 1987/89 is different again (Marked: E77B-11654-AA). Look at the original 7 pin switch you have now, it has an ID number marked on it (Edit: see above) . The 10th digit of the VIN is a letter, decodes to the year. G = 1986 .. H = 1987. 1979/91 Econolines look identical, the grille, head lamps/tail lamps and all the sheet metal is the same. So how would you know what year they are by lookin' at them? |

The door identifier says 85 ( just thought to check that) As far as the vans I looked at in the wrecking yard, i checked the door identifiers and usually they write it on the side though Im sure its not always accurate. Somewhere online i read that i think 80-91 stuff was interchangeable so the vans I thought would match were an 87 and 88. But I just was on a hunt to figure out if there is some difference between the years and was kinda desperate to find another van that had a 7 pin switch. it just didn't make sense that mine had one and none of the others did. Which made me feel someone must have wired some random switch on there. But now that your explaining they do have different parts it makes me feel less crazy. Any idea where I can get a replacement switch then? Edit- just searched the part number you gave and found some on ebay. investigating now. Also i did look for a part number on mine but didnt see one. |

Got it thanks Bill. So I went to pick n pull cuz I also happen to break a side window last night. Got lucky and found one van with a match. After I searched that Id number I got all kinds of links to eBay for trucks, mustangs ect. So I found a 73 ford truck and as luck would have it 7 pin switch! But sadly still no dash lights. Back to square one. I guess I’ll change every fuse regardless should do the lights too even though they all look good. The brake light lights up as well as the headlight light but not the others :( |
