Tailgate Damper for 2017 XLT
So I have been wanting the tailgate damper for some time now. Coming from a 2007 Toyota Tundra, with a factory tailgate damper I knew that this would be tough to live with. I always knew the Ford product didn't have this on the lower trim models.
So now I'm trying to do this OEM and on the cheap. In the F150 forums, i found a post about buying two parts individually instead of the kit, and it was about $35 instead of $65 for the same two items. The two parts are the roller and the strut. Does anyone know if the 2015-18 F150 parts will work on the 2017 F250? I am thinking that they will, but don't want to just assume. The fact that you state "OEM" and "Cheap" in the same sentence amuses me!

Ha, I know it is a little oxymoronic! So are OEM prices! Basically, the kit runs $65 and buying individual products is $35 for the same thing.. Just looking to save some cash, so I can eventually get spray in bedliner, tonneau cover and tint the truck.. I have done a few mods, but most are under $100.

I recommend you give a good look at that product I linked above. Super easy to install, about 1/3 the cost of OEM, and does a great job. I don't lay a hand on the tailgate once I pop it open; it just floats down gently.

I installed the OEM. It works great and is totally concealed. Wish I had seen buying just the parts vs kit and saving $$.

I had a 2015 F150 and purchased the parts separately and was cheaper. The 150 already had the ball fitting installed for the shock to snap on to. My 2017 f250 was different, it did not have the ball already intallled and the shock mounted differently than the 150. I purchased a f250 kit that came with all the parts needed. Look at some videos on YouTube on the f150 install and from what I remember the ball mount is on top the f250 is on the bottom. If you pop out your tail light you will see where the ball mount needs to be threaded in towards the bottom. Me personally like the OEM hidden behind the light and didn’t mind spending the extra money on either the F150 or 250 |

Got my OEM dampener off eBay from Fairlane Ford for 50.00 shipped. This was some months ago. I looked at the others like the Dee Zee model posted above. I was not impressed with it so I went OEM Your money spend it the way you want. OEM, perfect fit and took about 20 minutes to install. |
I just went outside and popped out the light to take a quick pic. The f150 installs pointing up towards the top of the light opening and the f250 installs pointed down. These pic are the f250. I bought the kit for the 250, putting the bracket on is the hardest part (tight fit for a wrench and the bolt is self tapping) took me maybe a 1/2 hour. One of the best mods

The trick to getting that self tapping bolt in is to start the bolt from the opposite direction. That way you can get a wrench in easily and cut the threads. Back it out and install it on the correct side. Just took a couple of minuets.
