2017 EXPEDITION BRAKE FADE

My 2017 Expedition has 12,000 miles. The brakes seem fine during normal operation. However, in emergency stopping, the brakes seem to be fading. The distance it needs to stop seems excessive. Any suggestions?

Well brake fade is rather normal in heavy deceleration especially if its repetitive brake applications. What circumstances are leading up to the fade? Also remember the AdvanceTrac, RSC and ABS also play a role in brake applications.

The brake fade is not from repetitive brake applications. It comes on even with 1 sudden stopping incident. I understand it is a heavy vehicle. Iv'e owned 4 Expeditions since 2008, all new. None of them stopped like a sports car, but this one seems to be worse. I am also aware of the ABS system. This happens without the ABS activating due to loss of traction during braking. Thanks for the response.

I'm wondering if Ford went to a harder compound brake pad material. Usually, by now, there would be a fair amount of brake pad dust on the wheels. I haven't seen any significant dust as yet.

Might be the harder compound, my 15' EL 4x4 front brakes lasted 80K miles. At 95K now and the rears are almost due.

glockholiday. Thanks for the input. I only have 12,000 mi. on my '17, but may be looking to replace the pads with an after-market set.

Too bad your Expy didn’t come with a warranty :-(

glockholiday 10-06-2018 12:24 PM

How would warranty cover brake pads?

pdqford 10-07-2018 05:49 PM

Sorry. I didn’ mean to imply the brake pads are the fault.
But If the vehicle had a new car warranty, I’d expect it to cover brakes that don’t function correctly/safely, what ever the cause.

Doesn't sounds like a pad composition issue, appears that the pads are glazed or compromised with something (tire dressing, wheel cleaner, etc.). Good luck....

Yeah maybe test drive another one to compare

I don't suspect a mechanical issue with the brakes. Pads, etc won't be covered by a warranty. Thanks.

Thanks. I gave that some thought. It would appear no one else has had a similar issue, just based on pad composition. I'll see what happens when I change them out.
Thanks again for all the input.

Let us know how it turns out, betting pads will be the answer. The brakes on all my Expeditions have performed well, and all had long life. good luck..

If the rotors are glazed new psds won't do much unless you turn the rotors too.
