Transmission issues
 

1996 Eddie Bauer, 5.8 liter

Truck is having issues upshifting. It will do it, but only after accelerating and then getting off the throttle and then back on ... sometimes.

So, 2 questions:
1) If anyone has a tip that it is something easy like a sensor, I'd love to hear it;
2) If it is just that this 22 year old tranny is giving up the ghost: is there a better stronger transmission I should upgrade to; or is it just best to get this one re-built?

96 if still on original transmission should be considered as a miracle: my 94 didn't last past 70,000 miles.

When they rebuilt it, they have to use "heavy duty" parts because Ford already discontinued the original parts (they knew those are junk made of aluminum). The rebuilt transmission is still going now after 200,000 miles...

BTW, if I have to do it again, I probably will buy the best factory rebuilt one online, buy a transmission jack, and do it myself. I think it will be cheaper and better.

The E4OD transmission is 100% electronic controlled. Any sensor out of range can cause erratic transmission operation. First thing to do is check for codes. Way too often someone is convinced the transmission is bad then went to the time and $expense$ to have it rebuilt, but end up with the same problem.

The above scenario frequently happens without an active Check Engine Light.


If your transmission would need rebuilt it has the best upgrades already installed from the factory.

My 94 E4OD still have aluminum hub on steel shaft: Ford's way to increase profit margin. As soon as the aluminum crack (it always does), you lost the transmission.

Hmmm, my trans started doing that the first time it required a rebuild (just a refresh, with the usual worn soft parts replaced), but as Randy already mentioned, check for codes first before taking further action.

Ford should have recalled this transmission. But instead, they sell you "heavy-duty parts" to fix it.

considering something that 23 yrs out of production says something for fords work. my bronco is approaching 200k and just did a fluid change while doing a rear main seal. front seal too while i was in there and it was still in good shape. im with RLA2005 on checking codes. go buy yourself a innova code reader and find out for yourself what might be going on. post it up here and we can help you more.

BTW, who makes the best factory rebuilt E4OD transmission in the country? Any recommendations?

don't know who makes the best but i've seen this name come up more than once. don't know if they do whole transmissions or not. contact them.

It says "This valve body is intended for high horse power, forced-induction trucks utilizing high stall torque converters. it is not recommended for mildly modified trucks or daily drivers."
So it's probably not for most people.

That is the comp body. The first section says any regular one can be built.

as for builders, PATC transmissioncenter.net, TCI tciauto.com, XDP xtremediesel.com, these are all good builders and have been mentioned on this site.

I've read several times Brian's Truck Shop does some of the best E4OD rebuilds, including several upgrades and improvements.
