Fuel Fill Rate Question
i just bought a 2018 F350 Limited with the long wheelbase and 48-gallon tank. The fuel fill seems really finicky - I have to hold the fuel pump nozzle just barely open to keep from tripping the nozzle shut-off. That means it takes a long time to refuel. Is this common for this configuration? I would appreciate some observations from others before I talk to the dealer about this. The truck I just sold (2008 F360 Supercab diesel, long box) would take on fuel as fast as the pump would put it out. Thanks! |
My 2009 has that problem which turned out to be a blocked vent. |
I have a 2018 CCLB as well and when I first got the truck I had the same thing happen to me. I had to stand there and hold the handle barely open no matter how I positioned the nozzle in the filler neck. I can't explain it, I fill up at the same place I always have now I can set the handle on the latch at full open and it fills just fine. :confused:

My 2018 CCLB with 48 gallon tank works perfect. I love going to truck stops and filling with the 1.5' nozzle.

No issues here. I used a truck stop nozzle once but it didn't seem to be all that fast. Not any faster than a diesel pump at a regular fuel station. Maybe it was for the "slow" guys. :)
I have noticed that the RV lane at Flying J is just as slow as the the lanes for the cars. |

I have the little boys tank on my CCSB F250 PSD and the class 8 lanes typically flow at a rate much quicker than the car/light truck lanes. If you want a full tank you need to wait 30 seconds after initial shut off to let the foam settle in order to top it off. |
With the larger diesel nozzles @ the truck stop pumps, I can start pumping, yawn, look around for a few seconds and the ~34 gallon tank is full.

I have no idea if this applies to your situation but I once had a F-150 that did the exact thing you describe and I was told at the dealership that there is a valve at the base of the fill tube that shuts closed if the truck rolls over in a accident and prevents fuel spillage and subsequent fires. I have no idea if this was BS or real. I was out of warranty and knew I would be selling soon so I opted to put up with it a short time and not pay the price to have the tank removed. |
my 18 f250 6.2L small tank does the same thing....kinda irritating. Any thoughts? its one of the things i plan on mentioning when i take it in for its first service. Im thinking a vent valve isn't functioning properly, but I'm not sure exactly what it has as components for that system

No problems here either...nice to have a 48 gallon tank that fills quickly.

34 gal Gas tank here with the same issue. Filled up yesterday and longest spurt was about 4 seconds. Pump must have clicked off 40x to the point the Coscto safety guy came over thinking I was topping off and ready to spill over. This was only to fill up from 3/4 tank so unless this is figured out,filling up from empty will be a planned event for sure. Perhaps a venting issue or lack thereof is causing the fuel vapors to activate the pump overflow shutoff. Next time I’ll try holding the spring loaded pump seal back with opposite hand like filling a motorcycle to see if that works. |
