Spare tire too close to exhaust?

Take a look :D

About a 2” gap from exhaust

From the rear
I put 35s on my 17 CC long bed, but I also wanted my spare to match. It came in today and I had the factory 275/65R18 taken off and replaced with my Toyo AT 35x12.50x18. It fits, but it is snug. So, yes, 35s will fit.

To re-group on my post, for those of you with 35s for spares driving the 6.7, have you encountered any issues with exhaust temps damaging your spare? The other thought, maybe fab up a heat shield of some sort???

Comments welcomed!

Just rotate it every so often so it cooks evenly lol j/k I am not sure

That's pretty close. I'm not sure what the exhaust temp is at the tail pipe. Worst case you could always have a heat shield fabed up and mounted there.

If that's a 6.2, I wouldn't worry about it. If that's a 6.7, I'd want more space due to high regen exhaust temperatures.

AK-AlumADuty 08-16-2018 08:37 PM

^^^ Yeah, it’s a 6.7 which is why I questioned it. Looks like I might be fabbing a heat shield...

Do you have the ability to take temp readings on both the pipe and the tire? Looks like the hot spot on the pipe might be at the hanger area.

I think there was a shield on the previous gen or atleast my 2012 from what I remember.

Why not wrap the exhaust pipe? We wrap the pipes on our service trucks near airlines, tires and anything sensitive. Use the lava wrap and stainless zip ties. Works well.

My 2018 has a large heat shield protecting the spare from the exhaust. What happened to yours?

Maybe different depending on gas or diesel? Mine is 6.2.

Lava Shield from Heatshield Products might be overkill. I used their stuff on my prior truck when I put long tube headers on it to protect the brake lines. I'm in the process of adding a couple of their products to my side-by-side in an effort to keep the heat out of the cab. On my F-350 I put their Thermaflect Sleeve (velcro) on the transmission lines to shield them from the exhaust heat.

Heatshield Armor or Muffler Armor would probably do the trick.

This is my 2nd 6.7 Diesel. Both have never had a heat shield. For whatever reason, it seems the exhaust on the 17 gets hotter than my 2011 did.

So if the 6.2 gasers have a heat shield, maybe I’ll buy one?

I’ve had my 35x12.50 KO2 mounted in the factory spare location for over 31k and no issues what so ever. I know because I had to use it last week unfortunately. But it was sure nice having a full-size spare to utilize.

I have a 2017 6.2 and there is definitely a heat shield there. I tried adding a pic but it was bloody massive. I wouldn't say its huge tho like other poster mentioned. Min more or less covers the 1/4 of the tire that is near the exhaust from what I could see a min ago in pitch black. Have never dropped the tire tho to see the full size of it.

Anyone have a part number for 6.2 gaser heat shield? Not that I’m opposed to wrapping it, it’s just unsightly with the wrap right where it’s visible.
