Reclining bench seat?
OE bench doesn’t recline and it’s killing me. What were the split benches called? All I can find are the buckets and center console (bronco) and single split without buckets(EC/CC) I really want the buckets with center seat. What models and trim did those come in? Also have any of you modified your bench to recline more? |
It sounds like the 40/20/40 seats is what you are looking for, they are bucket seats that have a center console that folds up to make a third seat.
If you have a Super cab truck then you'll need to find one out of either a bronco or another Super cab in order for them to bolt in without any modifications. But if you have a Crew Cab it will need to be a seat from a another Crew or Regular cab to bolt in. I'm assuming you don't have a regular cab, since there would be no room to recline anyway. |
It’s a standard cab but I can move the seat forward a little if I can recline back a smidge. The seat is just to upright for my taste. Thats why I was thinking about modifying the frame to give me a few degrees more angle or getting buckets. |
When I used to have a super cab truck,I unbolted the front bolts.Placed large nuts (don't have to actually thread) as spacers between the floor and the bench seats mounts.This tips the bench upward and tilts it back.It was very nice.I think I had to experiment with the amount of spacer I used but it was still very quick and easy to do.
I can't do this with the standard cab,as I'm too tall to slide the seat forward and tilt it.As is,I wish I had another couple inches to slide back,so I've never attempted it.You do gain leg room back to a small degree too though,as you raise the front of the bench but I'm pretty sure you would still lose too much leg room if tried,not too sure though,the more I think about it. Anyway,since you claim that you can sacrifice some,you probably should give it a try.It's been too many years now to remember if I had to use longer bolts due to the added spacer,so you may want to grab your wrench,loosen the bolts up,and head to the hardware store and perform the mod in the parking lot so you can run back in and get whatever you might need for bolts/washers/larger nuts for spacers etc. |
The washer thing is s good idea I’ll try that first. I’m 6’2 and space is fine I could loose a click or two on the bench and be comfortable still. Now the height of the brake pedal is another issue all together IDK WTF Ford was thinking there. |

Just cut and extend the hooks that latch the seat back

So I got to thinking. I could grind the frame we’re it rests on the stop. Or I could modify the stop. Or what finally donged on me was I could change the pivot point of the seat back. What i I did was unbolted the two shoulder bolts that bolt the upper and lower seats together. Then I pulled the seat forward so the back would recline. Got it adjusted to we’re it was comfortable and marked were the holes needed to be. Here comes the the tricky part. There is a nutplate on the inside of the lower frame that the bolt screws into. I drilled the new hole so it would go through the corner of the nut plate. So now I have a hole with 75% of the edge of hole in the nutplate. Not as strong as factory but it’s not putting the threads under tension but the bolt under shear so it should be fine. Also I drilled the holes slightly undersize as the bolts are body bolts and they make there own threads quite nicely It worked perfectly can’t even tell it’s been modified and so much more comfortable with a little lean. Just keep in mind,that modifying the rear to tilt,doesn't raise the front and what you gain by raising the front while it tilts you back,is an increase in leg room since your legs will be up higher on the seat.

Correct but rotating the seat wouldn’t solve the issue of feeling like I was being folded in half. I needed a different angle not just a rotation. I lost 3 clicks total so what an 1” or so. I can live with it. It’s so much more comfortable now. |

It moved it forward and up that’s the bottom seat upside down. |
I would put a lock nut on as well

This is a neat idea. I akways hated the upright seating position of bench seats. The problem is that the reg cab trucks have such little legroom. I'm 6' and there wasn't enough for me. That's why I have a super cab truck now.
