Running boards (chrome) bubbling and peeling?

Have any of you guys noticed any 'bubbling' or peeling of the chrome stuff on your OEM running boards? I washed my truck over the weekend and was a bit irritated to find exactly that, in many spots, on my driver side running board. I'll post a pic later but seriously, this is annoying. We don't even have 10,000 miles on her yet and am now wondering if this'll be another warranty thing like the valve stem issue, where I had to spend hours at the dealer (my dealer is great and helpful) and researching stuff on my own time.

Before I go through all that, are running boards expected to show this level of wear with only a few thousand miles? This isn't just rust spots but the chrome layer has actually peeled back in spots to a white underlayer that sorta looks like plastic. :-X15

I have noticed exactly the same situation on my early build 17. I have 24K on her after purchasing in Dec 2016, Im thinking this should be covered under the 3Yr/ 36K warranty but have not inquired about it yet.

I have noticed the same thing. I have made it through my second winter as well, as I have owned since Dec 2016. My running boards have been showing these blistering and peeling since end of the first winter. On this dealer service I made note(I have service package and extra warranty) of my concern with the running baords, the battery brackets corroding, as well as the chrome tow hooks rusting. They have ordered all the parts and are to tell me when to come in. I will let you know how I do on this....

Thanks - please do let us know. I also have the service plan and extended warranty. I'll be scheduling soon for the 10,000 mile oil change and will give them a call to let them know.

My grille did the same thing and the dealer told me a lot of trucks coming in with boards like yours. Just google it and its been a common problem for a while on the past couple body styles. My grille made it 3,000 miles so at 10k you're doing very well. lol The dealer covered mine no problem.

My boards looked the same after one winter. Disappointing!

My 18 XL STX chrome grill is starting to do the same thing at 4k miles.

My driver's side running board is beginning to bubble the chrome. I was at the dealership for "the works" this morning and while there I had them enter a warranty claim for the running board. I'm waiting to hear how it will be handled.

The truck goes in tomorrow for it's 10,000 mile service. Spoke to the body shop manager and they're going to take a look at it and probably enter a claim for mine, as well. Someone just started a thread about having running boards sprayed with LineX. I might consider the same...

ESP will not cover them. 3yr/36k only on running boards.

Here are mine after 3 years.. didnt notice it till the spring. Was told sand/salt works it's way under the black plastic pieces and starts rubbing at the chrome. Chrome then starts to crack underneath and water then gets inside and this is the result.

I guess this doesn't surprise me. A 2016 Expedition that a family member had did the same thing. Albeit, they were body color painted boards. Best of luck with a resolution to everyone with the issue.

They just callled all my parts are in but line running board. Hoping to get it done before I head out on holidays. Battery tray and brackets, tpchrome tow hooks, , and one of two inning boards.

The tow hooks are real bad about this.
Looks like some sort of thin or cheap chrome overlay. Not true chrome

That's what I'm thinking. Pretty cheesy to have a high-end truck's image tarnished like this by simple crap (valve stems, running boards, tow hooks, batteries, etc). It's a great truck but me wasting hours of my time at my dealer isn't what I had in mind when I purchased it. Got an update on the valve stem issue, this morning when dropping it off. My truck was the first to help them figure out what was going on here in AK. That was the "opening of the flood gates". I wouldn't be surprised if that one turns into a recall before too long. I love my truck and am a Ford guy through and through but I have to admit, these 'nickel & dime' issues have been disappointing.
