Making them was easy- had a friend do it :) Assembling & Installing- kind of a pain. I wanted a clean look so opted to mount them directly to my hitch. It’s 1/4” plate, so I decided to tap the holes I drilled. After measuring and aligning multiple times, I found the best spot. Securing them to mark the holes was fun (not). First hole drilled/tapped- looking good! Second hole, doing well- SNAP! Broke the tap (D@MN!). Oh, well, adapt and overcome. Whew- one side on. Moving onto the other side; same as the previous; one hole perfect, and broke yet another tap! Double D@MN! Finished both sides with hitch pins- yes, these are removable. Install complete, a few cold ones to ease my troubles and wall-ah- dirt curtains If I had to do it again, I’d probably weld the flanged section to the hitch rather than tapping. |
Good job...use a good cutting fluid and tap slow with lots of backing up...or maybe you just needed a better quality tap. Are these for protecting a trailer?

Yeah, my TT has received more than it’s fair share or rock rings. I was going to buy some Rock Tamers, but 1) They don’t fit on a 3” hitch shank, & 2) They want an arm, a leg, & your first born for them bad boys. No thanks- |
Nice work. That should give you good coverage.

Nice! Wish I would hjave done something like this 10 years ago when I first bought my 5th wheel. Love to see them in person. Want to make me a set??? Extra wide or my dually. :)

Those are pretty nice, especially for home made. And removable too!
|
Ah-ha! I thought you were the one who made the thread asking about those. Glad to see you had some made to your liking!
|
Wish some one made something like that that we could buy. I'd rather have those than the ones that go on the receivers when I have my tt attached.
|
Nice job AK.

Being a solid mount and only on one side, they need to be spring mounted (as seen on semi trucks) or support the other end some how. In time the single rigid mount will fail and it won't be pretty.

I would love something like that on my truck!

I've been searching my options for the same thing. Those look great !

Since I don't really have the resources to make my own, I went ahead and ordered a set of Rock Tamers from eTrailer.
Saw a bumper pull the other day that had a hole punched in the front from a hunk of metal thrown up by a rear tire. Hope these are substantial enough to stop that kind of projectile. |
