96 7.3 Total dog taking off specs for weak hpop ?

So on my truck with a e4od, when I go to gas it from a stop light my truck is just a slug trying to get going. Then at about 1650 rpm it’ll start to pick up. Even with a custom chip and billet wheel it’s always done this. What’s the specs on testing the hpop to see if it’s weak ? I have a scanner with live data for PIDs.

Does it get worse when its hot? Does it struggle to start up?

Dutter 2 07-14-2018 12:01 AM

Nope hot or cold is about the same. And I can be harder to start when it’s cold but I leave my glow plugs on just a little longer and it’s fine. I remember checking my values on my hpop when I had a crank no start and they were good. Just can’t remeber them

Here's information on the HPOP. Note it says that an HPOP upgrade is not for everyone. There is a section on how to test your HPOP. Read about boost. You might have intake leaks, losing boost. What PIDs are you monitoring for performance? ICP pressure is the regulated HPOP pressure. Does your truck pull good once the boost kicks in?

Ok thanks I’ll check that out. And I was watching icp pressure and ipr duty cycle but that was for when my truck would crank and not start. Turned out to be the IDM. So I didn’t get a chance to drive it with the scanner. And my boost pressure is good without chip I max out at 18 psi with chip 23 psi and my intake plenum is tight with no oil soaked spots

And my truck seems to tow fine with the chip. But I don’t have another obs 7.3 to compare to

The computer won't shoot the fuel to it until it starts blowing a boost. This limits emissions and EGTs. To make power you gotta have boost and fuel.

The PIDs for boost can be confusing and I can't recall them at the moment. There is a Baro sensor and MAP sensor and maybe another. Backpressure? There are different PIDs that show the raw data and the sums of the pressures, etc. I don't think you get much boost until the RPM you are describing. When you are turning enough rpm and you kick it a little, the computer shoots some fuel to spin up the turbo and off you go.

I don't see it discussed much but aeration in the fuel and aeration in the oil, either one will inhibit injection. There are tests in the manuals.

Yep that’s true and also why I’m thinking maybe it’s just normal how doggy these trucks are at low end. Maybe I’ll just put in a VVT turbo 🤔 lol nah

HardScrabble 07-14-2018 01:04 PM

That's what I say. Make it work the way it is supposed to work and call it a day.

Check the turbo for play and watch the PIDs to make sure nothing is going wrong. Low fuel pressure can kill injectors. Check it.

These are the trucks that gave the 7.3 the reputation as the best engine Ford ever put in a pickup. Why mess with it?

What are you using for a scanner?

Dutter 2 07-14-2018 01:17 PM

Because 275 hp is just no fun :-X04 one day I plan on building one sexy motor but just takes money. My turbo is good I rebuilt it last year and rechecked it after 10k miles. And I use the really common snap on scanner
