Temperature needle pegging while towing
 

Hi yall. I have an 03 F350, with the 6.0. The temp needle pegs, only when I'm towing. If I slow down my MPH, it will go down, to normal. It doesn't leak coolant. I dont get steam coming out from under the hood. I'm getting no codes with a scanner, and it starts blowing warm AC air, at an idle.

Sounds like the fan is not engaging. Any OBDII monitor?

What does the monitmonitors do, exactly?

The monitor will serve several functions. It will indicate what the computer is reading, ie. water temp, oil temp, battery voltage etc. Will also read diagnostic codes if any show up. Scan gauge ll is fairly easy and not expensive. about $125 at autozone, camping world. Also off the net for maybe a little less.

When the needle pegs do you get a loud noise at the same time? Its loud enough it will scare ya when it occurs.

No sir, I get no noise.

If it doesn't sound like a jet taking off then the fan isn't working.

Its louder than the turbo? I keep hearing about the noise, and having a bad fan clutch.

If the coolant temp gauge moves any higher than the normal mark, pull over and let it idle to cool down. The gauge is a dummy gauge and doesn't go above normal until you are already overheating. If you haven't already blown a head gasket, you run a great risk every time it overheats.

OBD2 monitoring is HIGHLY recommended for the 6.0. You can see your actual coolant temp, plus a lot of other important info.

also, as someone else said, you need a new clutch fan. You will definitely hear it when it kicks in. Hopefully you got lucky and nothing was damaged from heat. Check your oil filter standpipe. If it is melted, you have some big problems brewing.
