55 F100 intake manifold question
Hello to All - I'm new to FTE and looking forward to learning from you all. I have a '55 F100 with the 223. Recently, I picked up a 292 as a replacement engine (EDB-E). It's a rebuilt long block with some spare parts to complete the build. My question is about intake manifolds. I have two; ECW 9425 A and ECG 9425 G. By the id numbers, they are from a '57 272, Both intake's appear to sit correctly on the heads and valley. Before I lock them down, does anyone know if they will work or do I need to locate a 292 intake? Trying to stay original when I can. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks so much. JA

All 54-64 intakes bolt to your heads. The issue is port size. Older models have smaller intake runners. Do you have a 4 barrel or 2 barrel carb? This is may help. Y-Block.Info Intake Manifold Casting Numbers |
Thank you for the reply and link. Turns out I misspoke re the production year. The intakes I have are both from a 1955 272. Given your point about the runners being different, do you think I would be best suited to locate a 58/59 intake for a 292? I've seen lots of aftermarket 4 barrel manifolds that are also an option. Or is it not a that big of a deal and the difference of a 292 intake vs an early 272 is negligible? Not sure which way to go as the bolts do line up. Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
I tried uploading pictures of the truck. Not sure if they came through but hey, I tried! The truck is a driver. It's been in parades and also made numerous trips to the dump! Either way, I really enjoy it - and most importantly, so does my wife. Once I get the rebuild done and running, I'll swap out the 223. Until then, I just keep driving and smiling! Thank you again! Forgot to mention that the intakes I have are both 2 barrel. If the pic's came through, you can see that as well. Thank you!

Looks good! I’d get it running and see how I likes it. A popular thing to do on Y Blocks is to change over to the desireable 57 Ford 312 intake (EZC-9425-B) FYI NOT ALL FORD 4 Barrel intakes are desireable and a small 4 barrel (around 400/450CFM). Another thing to do is to change the distro to the later 57-64 type with only one vacuum port. These two Mods will really wake up a Y-Block. Try to stay away from anything from a 54 as some parts won’t cross to the 292, 272 engines. |
Hey @my1955F100, I have a 55, 272 with the EZC-9425-B intake and a Edelbrock 500 cfm four barrel carb, and a 1960 distributor really works out well. These old engines are old school, but really sweet. Find you some ram horns or put some headers with dual exhaust. It will sound really good. That's one thing about these old y blocks they have a really good sound to them. |
Thanks to you both for the info. I'm seeing several of the EZC-9425-B intakes on eBay. Those original ram horns are crazy expensive!! Good to know headers are a good option. Half the price and hey, stock manifolds were always the first thing we changed - back in the day! Looking forward to hearing this engine run. Open headers on an engine stand are sure to get the neighbor's attention!
I found a rebuilt 292 distributor from NAPA for $94. They say it's an OE replacement. What's unique about the 1960 distributor vs the 1958/59 stock for the 292? Would I be ok to go with the NAPA rebuild or should I look for a 1960 version? Thank you for any and all replies! Very helpful as this is my first engine rebuild in decades. |
