Wicked Wheel 2 in Hypermax Pulse Turbo kit

I just got a Wicked Wheel 2 from R&D. My initial analysis is: it's freaking amazing.

I come into a lot of these things with a lot of skepticism. Not a lot of the enhancements for the IDI pan out like the manufacturers claims. But the WW2 exceeded expectations.

I took it out for a spin just now to test the efficacy of the Wicked Wheel. I noticed changes right away. City driving gets about double the boost I was getting before, about 3-6psi. On the highway, it got fun. I was driving in Los Angeles, so I couldn't take it up to a mountain yet, but I was getting 10.0psi at 3/4 throttle on the flat roads at highway speeds. 10psi with an unloaded empty van (except hauling my fat ass). Empty. I wasn't getting 10psi with the hypermax turbine unless I was completely loaded with 3 tons of equipment up a 6 degree grade.

I can't wait to take it up to the mountains this weekend to see what I can get. I haven't even messed with the timing or fuel screw yet either. I'm currently timed at 10 deg BTDC, and the optimal Hypermax spooling is around 4-5 deg.

Needless to say, I'm very impressed with DieselSite and their product. Exceeded expectations already, and I just got started calibrating it.

I'll have an install video and thread on my website soon, once I edit the videos. I want to show how I did the turbine replacement in the van, which coincidentally was A LOT easier than what appeared in the videos for the IDI and PSD trucks. One of the very few benefits of the van over the truck.

I've heard nothing but mild at best results from a wicked wheel, nice to hear it worked for you. Maybe they are worth the money.

I remember when I had to take a banks turbo off a van, took the doghouse off and it was like right there. Everything has its ups and downs

Good to hear that you're pleased with your purchase. Let us know how it performs in the mountains.

I'm going to turn the fuel screw down a flat and adjust the timing. I'm not trying to make a hot rod here. I'd rather have moderate boost with dramatically lower EGT's, to help improve the longevity of the engine.

I imagine it must feel pretty peppy for an old van that never saw more than 125hp to the wheels stock.

It won't hurt anything to leave it as it is, if you can keep your foot out of it :D

I can't help myself. This van drives faster than my jetta now. I'm constantly hamming on it. My MPG is going to be terrible for the next few weeks while I have fun.

Speaking of fun... I tuned it to 6 deg BTDC and kept the fuel screw where it is. Took it on the highway with my daughter today, and put the empty van at WOT. It got up to 12.8 psi on the straightaway at about 1100 deg F EGT.

Freaking amazing. WW2 outperforms. It was the first time that little hypermax kit exceeded 12psi. They were spec'ed to max out at 11psi IIRC. I'd expect it to go up to the 15's up a slope, maybe more.

I'm going to turn it down a flat. Not all the smoke clears at WOT, so I'll tune it down a flat. That should afford me some decent boost without wasting fuel out the tail pipe. Plus it'll bring the EGT's down even more.

I'm seriously reconsidering my shelved custom van-innercooler project. With these pressures, I could use an Innercooler to help bring the intake temps down some.

Wish I lived in cali I'd have to come see this :D

I think an intercooler would be the bee's knees

I'm excited to see where this progress goes. Since you mention the excessive black smoke I think turning it down is a good idea.

Let us know boost numbers once you take a flat off of it

I documented all my current progress with my Wicked Wheel here: Wicked Wheel 2 Installation on a Hypermax IDI Van Turbo Kit [VIDEO] ? IDI Online

Also, I edited my install video and posted it to youtube:
