F250 6.2 Fuel Mileage 4.30's
Did a 200 mile round trip yesterday. 95% highway (65 mph) 5% urban streets. 80 degrees and 15 mph winds. Some crawling road construction areas.
17.1 MPG Very pleased and don't believe the 4.30s hurt one bit. |
Thank you for posting this sir. I looked online at 60+ dealerships in the SE for the same 6.2 4.30 combo...hoping to buy a leftover 17 or 18, but soon found out how rare this combo is at the dealerships. So, reality set in that to get what I wanted, I ordered a 19 with exact options I wanted. In the end maybe paying more, but 10-15 years down the road this combo may be the one most want vs 3.73. Nice to see that gas mileage is better than I thought, at least driving at reasonable highway speeds. 👍 |
I don't see how people get this good of mileage. I have a 17 with 6.2 and 4.30's and drive almost exclusively highway. I probably average 90% highway and country roads and I've never seen my trip read 15mpg, and it always reads high. Cruise set at 70mph I probably get 13.5mpg, had calculated. This is in Kansas, so not much hills either.

15 is about good as I can do with 3.73s after about 800 miles, might get better with break in. 13-14 is average.

I have the 6.2 w/ 3.73 and my best mileage was 15.9 in a combination of city and rural driving. Nothing over 60 with stretches of 45. And being very light on the go pedal. This is hand calculated. The truck always calculates it higher. My truck has 3000 miles. I dont see how folks with 4.30s get that kind of highway mileage. Added Info: 2017 Lariat CCSB 4x4 with 20 wheels. East central Florida on the coast. No hills, flat terrian. |
My truck has 8,000 miles on it but 5,000 of those are towing a fiver through the western mountains. That trip "loosened" the drivetrain up considerably. That might be the reason it is doing a little better than average.
My day-in and day-out average, living in a rural area, driving into town and about is 15 mpg. Lots of cold starts; 9 to 10 mile trips. It's crazy maybe but it's real mileage. I've got no reason to blow smoke. |

My first tank on my 6.2/4.30 combo was 14.5 according to the dash. I need to do the math myself to see if the dash can be trusted! Hoping it gets a little better as the truck breaks in. Towing to Colorado twice in the next couple of months so that should do the trick. |

Truck is totally stock.
I was getting less than 12 mpg when new. Drivetrain was extremely tight. It didn't coast. Let off the throttle and it was like throwing out a huge anchor. Also, it was January in Minnesota. Cold weather absolutely KILLS the mileage on these trucks. |
I would never buy a gas truck without 4.30's. All my V10 trucks had them.
And I am even more pleased that my F450 6.7 comes with 4.30's. |

Location and speed/driving style has a lot to do with mileage. I didn’t buy the 6.2/4.30 combo for mileage. I didn’t want the diesel but wanted to tow heavy easily. Tows like a champ but in Pittsburgh/Western PA it gets poor mileage. I get slightly less than 10mpg overall. 13 or so on the highway but with the cruise set at 75mph usually. In town I get 10 mpg due to the hills. Towing even a moderate load drops me to 8. Western PA mileage just sucks. My previous Silverado got maybe 15mpg on the highway with similar city mileage. Still very happy with the combo. |
What's the rest of the truck?? 2 wheel or 4 wheel?? Stripper XL or loaded to the gills Platinum? 4 door or 2 door?? DRW or SRW?? Anything that adds weight, width, or height is going to affect mileage. Have to know it all to compare apples to apples.

I wanted the 4.30's but couldn't pass up the deal on my '17 at the time. Since we only tow 5-6 times a year the 3.73's should be adequate. Our travel trailer weighs in at 9200lbs and I probably wouldn't to tow anything much heavier with the 3.73's. I average around 14-15 not towing and 8-9 towing.
